community, state, and nation are both similar and different.

Examine and identify cultural differences within the community.

how the content could be integrated with the Common Core.

ELL Considerations: Using a story book as well as pictures in the powerpoint for deeper
understanding

Vocabulary Development: culture

Preparation: What materials will be needed? Same Same But Different, Powerpoint on
countries

TIME: LESSON: MANAGEMENT:

Introduction: (15 min) Read the book Same, Same, But Different. Ask students to
point out differences they see with themselves and the two kids in the book while reading
Content/Activity: (20 min) Go through powerpoint, explaining each country to
students. Again, have students point out similarities and differences they notice between
themselves and their own culture and the countries we learn about.

Closure: (5 min) Have students share with a partner one thing America or their
family has in common with another country, and one difference.

Assessment: I will have students share some things they talked about during partner
talks, as well as through class discussions.

Adaptations: Annibel may not be able to see the power point, so I can move her closer.
Integration: How would you take this topic and integrate it into other subject areas? (Social
Studies, Visual Art, Dance, Health, PE, Life Skills, Music, Drama, Writing, Listening, Grammar,
Math, Etc.) How could you use technology to enhance this lesson?

Students can write about a country’s culture, they can create an art project out of it, they can
learn songs and dance from other countries.
