Brandon Hood-Farley December 5th, 2018, Practice # 20 Non-Conference

4pm to 6pm 2 hours Practice Objective: Make progress on defense, both in

transition and in a set defense, as well as work on transition offense and pick and roll.

Equipment: 20 basketballs, 20 reversible practice jerseys, 42 cones, in the main gym.

Cues for this practice: Defensively: Ball me man, jump to the ball, talk. Offensively:
Push the ball, call teammates name when passing.

4-4:10pm Warm-up

Description: The athletes will run a lap around the gym, and then proceed to do
dynamic stretches such as high knees, butt kickers, grass pickers, high kicks, shuffles,
hip opening stretches, etc. down and back from the baseline to the volleyball line. The
athletes will also get to decide many stretches that the team will do if they have any
ideas.
4:10-4:20 3 Man Weave

Description: The athletes will get in three lines at one baseline, the three lines will
be formed with one under the basket, one on the left wing/corner, and the other on the
right wing/corner. Three balls will be needed for this drill all of which will be in the middle
line. The player in the middle will choose to either pass to his teammate to the left or
right of him. After he passes to his teammate he will run behind the same teammate he
passed to. After a player catches a pass he will pass to his teammate across the court
and fill behind him. The players will do this all the way down the court until one of them
is close enough to take a layup without traveling. There is no dribbling aloud in this drill.
4:20-4:28 Defensive Slides

Description: Players will start in right hand corner of both baselines and will
shuffle slow and stay low with arms up to the elbow, then pivot 45 degrees and go back
towards the sideline and pivot at 45 degrees again when they make it to the sideline
where the half court line meets the sideline, then they will shuffle to the opposite free
elbow, then to the opposite corner of the baseline and sideline.
4:28-4:38 Shell Drill

Description: There will be 4 offensive players around the perimeter and 4

defensive players matched up with one of the other 4 players. The offense will be able
to pass the ball to any of their teammates and the defense will have to adjust while
jumping to the ball while the pass is in the air. The defense will have to talk so they
know who has the ball and who is in help position. To start this drill the offense won’t be
able to move but as the drill progresses we will add cutting from the offense as well to
put more strain on the defense for communication.
4:38-4:46 6 vs 4 Defensive drill

Description: This drill is meant to make the defense communicate and shift to the
correct spots while having two less players on the court. The entire defense has to be in
sync in order to cover everyone and not have multiple players close out on the same
players. The offense is able to cut and move wherever they want and the defense must
be able to adjust.
4:46-4:48 Water Break

4:48-4:58 Pick and roll defense/offense

Description: In this drill there will be 2 offensive and 2 defensive players to

start the drill and the offense will run a pick and roll, and the defense will have to make
the right read. The defense must decide if they should switch the screen, hedge high on
the screen and get back, or simply go under the screen. The offense will also be able to
read the defense and are able to run a pick and roll, pick and pop, or slip the screen.
The defense must try their best to stop the offense and the offense must try their best to
score the ball.
4:58-5:08 Taking a charge drill

Description: There will be 3 offensive players and one defensive player.

The defensive player will have to jump to the ball on the pass and be able to get into
position to take a charge no matter what offensive player decides to drive the ball. The
offense will pass the ball around and drive when they think that they can catch the
defender out of position, and skip passes are allowed. If the defensive player cannot
make it to the correct spot in order to take a charge they will stay on defense.
5:08-5:18 21 cone shooting drill

Description: The team will be split in half evenly and will be

shooting from a specific set spot on the court. Players will get in a line and shoot; there
will be 21 cones on each baseline. Each time a player makes a shot they will run to the
opposite baseline and grab a cone, and then they will put the cone next to their team’s
line. The first team to get all 21 cones will be the winning team. The team who loses will
run 2 down and backs. If the teams are shooting well we will change the set area that
they are shooting from and do this multiple times.
5:18-5:28 Champion (3 on 2 drill)

Description: Champion is a drill where the team will be split into two equal
teams that will be playing against each other. There will have to be a rotation that
makes sense to each team to always have two players on defense and to always have
an outlet. This drill will be a continuous 3 on 2 drill where the defense must get a
rebound and pass to their outlet who will be on the right wing. The offense will be
allotted a total of three passes in order to score the ball. The only way to score points in
this drill is to score the ball on offense. The team who loses this game will have to run 2
down and backs.
5:28-5:30 Water Break

5:30-5:40 Full court layups

Description: There will be 6 lines, 3 on each horizontal half of

the court one at free throw line extended, one near the middle of center court, and one
on the opposite side free throw line extended. There will also be two players with a ball
on opposite ends of the court. These players will pass the ball back and forth between
the three lines down the court and after catching the last pass will take a layup. After
they take the layup they will get into the line that receives the first pass and will follow
their pass to the next line until they pass to the teammate who takes the layup. After
their teammate takes the layup the athlete who passes to the player who takes the
layup gets the rebound and is now the player who will take the layup.
5:40-5:50 Full court scrimmage

Description: The team will be split into even teams based on skill
and numbers. We will be making scenarios for the teams to deal with and see what they
do in specific scenarios that they may not have ever dealt with. Also the teams will be
expected to execute what was being gone over during practice. There will be limited
stoppages so the players can just play during these scenarios. If there is a problem that
occurs multiple times we may stop the drill to show the players what they should be
looking for/doing instead of what they are doing.
5:50-6:00 Cooldown stretching and break down of practice

Description: The team will be in a half circle on the court so that no

one is behind the coaches. The coaches will explain what went well during practice and
what still needs to be worked on. The captains of the team will be leading the static
stretching for the team while they are listening to the coaches.
