Introduction
This document is a usability analysis of Hire a Vandal by HandShake Inc., sponsored and
advertised by the University of Idaho. Hire a Vandal is the exclusive Career Services job
and internship online posting tool according to their website. HandShake is built to
function like familiar platforms such as LinkedIn, etc. With this tool students and alumni
have the ability to search and filter for any available positions, search upcoming career
fairs and communicate easily with employers.
Hire a Vandal is most commonly used to search and apply for internships and job
openings after graduation or for summer recess. Utilizing and applying this tool may help
you branch and gain connections, as well as supply you with suggested events and
positions.

Test Environment
This is the University of Idaho’s most current design and layout of Hire a Vandal,
advertised on their website www.uidaho.edu. The search engine platform used is Apple’s
Safari, updated with all current flash drives and plug-ins. Navigating this website on a
stable search engine such as Safari assures an easy experience.
Tests were conducted using a 2015 MacBook Pro on the quiet floor of the University’s
library. Website was navigated through Apple’s Safari engine.
Software experience should not be much of difference due to search engine selection, Hire
a Vandal was designed to support all internet search engines and run plug-ins and flash
drives independently.

Evaluative Criteria
The criteria used to evaluate given tasks are:
Effective: I was able to complete this task.
Efficient: I was able to perform this task in a timely manner.
Engaging: The software aided in the completion of the task.
Error Tolerant: The software pointed out any errors and offered a solution.
Easy to Learn: Software utilities used in this task were easy to learn.
Criteria given above are ranked on a 1-5 Likert scale. The five point system is to indicate an
option for neutral ground, intended for criteria that does not apply to the task:
1 being Strongly Disagree.
2 being Disagree.
3 being Neutral
4 being Agree
5 being Strongly Agree

TASK 1: LOCATE LINK ON SEARCH ENGINE
This task is to check if the University of

Idaho’s search engine is user-friendly.

Task 2: Set up Hire a Vandal Account
HandShake Profile View
This was the second screen in which appeared after being redirected to Hire a Vandal. Here the
website clearly guides you in filling out personal information such as education history, work
experience and a short biography. This information is fitted automatically into a pre-designed
layout that will display neatly as your profile.
There were some slight issues when you uploaded your work history and organization
information – If you upload a resume such as in task 4, the website displays the PDF link to your
document but also auto fills work experience resulting in duplicates.

To upload a resume guide your cursor to

the most top-right tab where your first
name should be and single click once.
Clicking on Documents directs you to the

page where you may upload any desired
documents you wish employers to view.
To upload your resume, hit browse next

to “Upload Resume”, and attach desired
file and click, “Upload”.

document and classify its document type before uploading.

to view all your uploaded
information in the fashion
employers would see it as.
This tool is effective and

helpful, it enables you to be
more tedious in the design of
your career profile.

you to a page with currently 25 tools that may improve your networking, interview skills, test prep
etc.

fonted title redirects you to a new page on the uidaho platform. Navigating around this page, you

Single clicking the blue font title redirects

you to a new page on the uidaho platform.
This link displays the Career Development

Director’s information, as well as a link
directing to the official CIS page for uidaho.
This is helpful as a direction tool but does

not provide any additional information.

Task 11: Create Career Journal in Career Center
Creating career journals can be helpful to both yourself and employers. All journals may be
selected as private or public, so information such as your strong points of focus when working or
career achievements can be toggled as hidden or seen.
Self-reflective writing may also aid in job performance in the future.

Task 12: Test Colleague Search Engine in Students
Searching for colleagues may be beneficial when making

connections in your profession for the future.
Single-clicking the Students tab at the top of your page directs you
to a search bar with corresponding filters shown to the left. You may
filter your search suggestions by clicking the boxes to the left of each
filter and apply.
This tool allows you to reach out and connect with potential
employers, or colleagues in the same study as you.
A list of suggested students you know is displayed. This is helpful,

personally I knew three of the first four suggested students.
Clicking on the corresponding profiles gives you the opportunity to

review other profiles.

Task 13: Test Events Explorer
Single-clicking the Events tab at the top of your screen directs you to a search page in
which you have the option of searching events, career fairs and jobs.
To search an event, select the green Search Events button and enter in your desired
event location.
This option is easy to use and efficient due to the option to search for upcoming
events and add them directly to your profile calendar.

Selecting Fair Search in the upper

right-hand side of your screen in the
Events tab takes you to the window
displayed to the left.
This search engine allows you to

navigate and filter events by their
location, category and even venue
host.
Fairs and events may also be

Favorited by selecting the gray star
Career Event Search Engine Display associated with said event.

Task 15: Search Part-Time Positions in Jobs
Clicking the Jobs tab at the top of your screen directs you to a search bar with
multiple available filters located under it.
This method of a search engine makes it extremely efficient for anybody searching
for a job, part time job or internship.
To navigate available part time jobs, simply select Part Time Job after filling out job
keywords and locations before searching.

Filters for selecting a job are important features in a search engine.
By entering “Civil Engineering”, in the keywords bar and choosing my expiration date as
seen above, I can apply for jobs that are not going to be available in the future. 13

The suggestion link is useful in

finding jobs based off of your
recorded favorite jobs, rsvp’d
events and jobs applied for.
This page provides links to

articles that may answer
questions such as trending
internships for your major and
portfolio management.
Very efficient tool in searching

for a job or internship.
Task 18: Search Popular Internships in Civil Engineering
As stated above, the link for Trending Internships at Idaho was found in the For You tab
at the top of the home main screen. Clicking on the link provided in the title of text
directs you to a variety of positions such as engineering marketing, engineering
management and even positions associated with sales.

To search an internship, begin

by filling in the provided
blanks this page gives you and
select See Jobs on the bottom
right corner.
Listed are internships available

to you based off of your
description selection.
This tool is very handy in the

case that you can indefinitely
go back and re model filters
when searching.

Task 20: Test Internship Application Process
After searching and picking out a desired internship, select the Apply link to the right of the
internship title. The pop-up window displayed lets you select your resume, cover letter and
whatever else you wish to attach to your application.

Recommendations
Setting up a profile was simple and efficient, along with how efficient it was to upload and
enter information and important documents. Features such as Employer View and the
Resources tab allow you to design and illustrate your profile in a manner that reflects you
personally. Having the option to log journals on past jobs and employers allows reflection
for both yourself and your peers. Links such as interview training and the Idaho Career
Information System found in Resources is an engaging experience in learning how to build
your profile and career.
Initially when you fill in your profile during the sign-up, make sure to upload your
documents before filling out work experience and organizations. There is an autofill
feature that takes key words/sections of your resume and displays them for you. This
would not be a problem unless you spent the time manually entering work experience in
your profile. Also, there is not much data that this page exclusively offers. The majority of
links connected to this page are redirections to the uidaho page you must navigate
through to find HandShake.
Uidaho Hire a Vandal webpage is very useful and efficient for someone who is graduating
or are alumni. It offers an opportunity to branch and network your name online and offers
information and graphics on how to have a more successful career.
