Should the United States Be More Restrictive of Gun Ownership?

During the American Revolution it was necessary to use weapons to achieve

independence from England. The Second Amendment, ratified in 1791, gave all Americans a

fundamental right to bear arms with the purpose of defending themselves and their properties to

have life and freedom. The opponents of gun control state that having weapons is

unconstitutional. Proposals for arms control argue that only states that have an armed militia

must possess weapons. (Miller 152)

On 17 of February of this year at least 17 people died in the shooting of Marjory

Stoneman Douglas High School. (Levenson). This event has mobilized students from all over the

country to request reforms regarding the control of weapons. One of the proposals offered by the

government is to arm teachers, contrary to what was held some years ago, but not everyone

believes that this is the solution. The questions are, how do students obtain semiautomatic

weapons? How can they enter them into the schools? Because there is no follow-up to young

people who have noticed that they have mental problems as in the case of Nickolas Cruz? I think

violence in schools and public places is becoming critical. Every day more students and their

families face the terror of going to school without the certainty of returning home with good. My

opinion is that the cooperation of the agencies responsible for mental health and schools should

pay more attention to people who manifest violent behavior to prevent massive acts of death in
schools and public places. Is it a question of the high index of weapons that exist in the country?

Is it custion of parents who do not distinguish the symptoms of violent behavior in their

children? Should teachers be armed in schools to protect students? Should mental health

agencies put information about potentially dangerous patients in the hands of the authorities?
