details, and produced an argumentative essay.

Not forgotten to my family, thanks for helping me in providing me with enough

facilities like notebook, printer and giving me support in order to finishing this

assignment. Next, thank you to all my friends for helping me in understanding the topic,

finding the main ideas and supporting details, and produced an argumentative essay

OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSEWORK

Through this coursework, I am able to :

1. apply appropriate reading strategies to understand the articles given.

2. identify the main ideas and supporting details.

3. transfer information from linear to non-linear form.

4. respond critically to the topic discussed in the articles by giving personal views

and opinions.

5. cite from a variety of sources to support argument.

4
INTRODUCTION

1. Definition: In this kind of essay, we not only give information but also present an

argument with the PROS (supporting ideas) and CONS (opposing ideas) of an

argumentative issue. We should clearly take our stand and write as if we are

trying to persuade an opposing audience to adopt new beliefs or behaviour. The

primary objective is to persuade people to change beliefs that many of them do

not want to change.

2. Organization: All argumentative topics have PROs and CONs. Before starting

writing, it is imperative to make a list of these ideas and choose the most suitable

ones among them for supporting and refuting.

3. Refuting opposing arguments: Before we start saying that the opponents are

wrong, we should specify their opposing ideas. Otherwise, it would be like hitting

the other person with eyes closed. We should see clearly what we are hitting and

be prepared beforehand so that he cannot hit us back. We can do this by

knowing what we are refuting.

4. Language: Signposts gain importance in the argumentative essay. They enable

the readers to follow our arguments easily.

2.0 ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY

The Dark Side of the Internet.

By : Haryani binti Zolkifli

Nowadays, the Internet has made a huge impact on the daily lives of people worldwide.

Instant messaging and social networks like Facebook has become a trend to millions of

people around the world. Internet means “an international computer network connecting

other networks and computers from companies, universities, etc”. (Oxford Advanced

Learner’s Dictionary, 2006). Even though the Internet is very good as everything is

available at the touch of a button, but actually the Internet produces more harm than

good. Internet bring lots of changes to the world because since it was introduce to the

world, the Internet users are connected each other where they can connected with

people in different locations and different ages where they can share their interests

together non-stop and having an updated information everyday.

Opponents of this idea claim that the Internet is such an everyday human

communication as it “allowed people to keep in touch with distant family members and

friends, to find information quickly and to develop friendships with people around the

world apparently” (Carnegie Mellon Study, n.d). To me, to a certain extent they might be

right but Dr. Diane M. Wieland (as cited in www.theage.com.au, 2006) who treats

patients with the Internet addiction mention that "obsession with and craving time on the

computer results in neglect of real-life personal relationships to the point of divorce". It

means that although through the Internet people will receive lots of pen-pals, but the

10
truth is when they started too obsessed with the online world and hanging around cyber

café for couple of hours, it may affects the relationship with the family members and

friends as it decreases the communication with others.

The Internet is actually harmful in many ways. Many people believe that the

Internet is a great help and a wonderful tools that can help them in searching lots of

information at the touch of a button. However, the validity of the Internet is questionable,

whether the information given is true or not. Robert Kiley in his article said there is a

case of a patient who died of kidney and liver failure after using hydrazine sulphate as

recommended by the Kathy Keeton website as an alternative treatment for cancer. It

shows that this kind of misinformation is very dangerous for people out there where

most of them are too lack of knowledge and simply believe that information that they

receive after searching it through the Internet. Sometimes, this misinformation in the

Internet is made by the Internet predator called hacker. Hacker is cyber stalking made

by uncivilized people to made harm of other person. Definition of hacker from Oxford

Advanced Learner’s Dictionary is “a person who secretly finds a way of looking at or

changing information on somebody else’s computer system without permission” (2006).

Many people suffer with this kind of action made by those uncivilized people. As a

student, it is vital for me to find any trusted resources in order to complete my

assignments or works. As we know, life as students is always playing with facts and

they need to provide the evidence of the facts that they have spoke or insist. But this

kind of unknown resources whether it is true or not, students will face difficulties in

choosing the right information. If they are using the wrong information taken from the

Internet, it might create a problem to them in order to give the evidence of their points to

11
the public. If that case happens, it will be a burden to the students as they “struggle to

keep up with technology and related social changes” (John D., n.d).

Plus, those who believe that the Internet is better than harm claim that the

Internet offers convenience in terms of carrying the tasks. Using the Internet, students

should not troublesome themselves to go to the library and search any information

needed as everything can be found in just a touch of a button. That is why some people

point that the Internet is the main source of information which is very useful for students

and it will save lots of time rather than going to the library and the information provided

are always up-to-date than the library. For me, they have a point in thinking like that.

Yet, students are related closely with the Internet but being too close with the Internet

might increases the numbers of plagiarism among students. Plagiarize in Oxford

Advanced Learner’s Dictionary gives a definition “to copy another person’s ideas, words

or work and pretend that they are your own” (2006). Nowadays, plagiarism seems to be

a shortcut for students in finishing their assignments. In my opinion, students should

spent large amount of time at the library and make it as a hobby. As a student, going to

the library, looking for books or articles which are related to the assignments and

searching for the information in the chosen books or articles that are suitable with the

topics in the assignments given are quite troublesome as it takes a long period to finish

it. That is why plagiarism becomes famous for the students as a shortcut in finishing

their work or assignments. Actually, this kind of plagiarism is a big mistake and those

using it will face big problem with the authorities and the chances of being kick out from

the institution are very high if you are convict in plagiarizing.

12
As a conclusion, I strongly believe that the Internet brings more harm than good.

Although it brings us benefits as we are going further through out the modernisation of

technology and information, but the bad effects of the Internet are more than the

benefits. The Internet may be a source of information, a communication tool in

connecting people and convenience in terms of carrying the tasks, but the truth is the

Internet may create problems in real relationship, misinformation which can be

dangerous to the world wide, damage loss made by uncivilized people call hacker and

increases the numbers of plagiarism among students around the world. If this case is

being left over without any prevention from the Internet users itself, the world will

produces a new generation with low quality and standard.

3.0 REFLECTION

Thanks to God finally I had finished my ELE 3101 - English for Undergraduates

Coursework right on time. Although I had lots of coursework and works to be done and

had difficulties in producing the argumentative essay based on the three articles given, I

had tried our best and this is the result.

Through this assignment, now I gained the skills in identifying the main ideas and

supporting details from the three articles given. First I admit that I am to weak in

understanding the articles, but with the help of Miss Emisharina binti Ismail and my

friends, finally I can understand the articles and identifying the main ideas and

supporting details.

Furthermore, I had learnt about how to transfer the main ideas and supporting

details into a graphic organizer, from linear to non-linear form. As we know, those three

articles contains lots of main ideas and supporting details and I need to choose the

most important ones and finally I managed to include all the main ideas and supporting

details into a graphic organizer in just one sheet of paper.

Moreover, the most important things are when I learnt to write an 1000 words of

argumentative essay by responding critically to the topic of the articles. First I did not

know what is argumentative; it’s type and how responds critically to the articles given.

But with the help of Miss Emisharina binti Ismail through her lectures and notes, I

manage to write an argumentative essay which I thought impossible to be done at the

first time.

14
One thing that opened my eyes was through online chatting, the spelling,

grammar is ignored by online people. As a result, many people will face problems with

grammatical errors and proper English is dying out. So as a future teacher, it will be my

responsibilities in helping my pupils from having the same problems.

With the help of my beloved lecturer, Miss Emisharina binti Ismail and the

cooperation with my friends plus lots of patients, I can finally manage my time in doing

this coursework. Through this coursework, I had learnt the value of cooperation when

my lecturer, Miss Emisharina with her briefing and my friends when they always helps

me to find the information needed and helps me with my grammar indeed my grammar

is not strong enough. And thanks to Miss Emisharina in guiding us the APA format in

writing the bibliography.

All the information that I gained through this coursework is very worthy for me to

practice it when I become a teacher soon. Thank you.
