When I began writing short book reports in the second grade, I remember having to pull
out my “pocket” dictionary and checking for spelling. I even had to use my dictionary or
thesauruses if I wanted to utilize a larger or different word. As the years have progressed, I have
realized (without even noticing in the process) that I no longer have to turn to a paperback
dictionary to check my spelling. Rather now, I can simply Google a word that somewhat
resembles what I am looking for...a task that takes virtually no time to complete.
Also as I have grown older and have written many more papers since the second grade, I
have also noticed how carelessly I might abbreviate words in my Instagram captions or reduce
my grammatical accuracy to fit all of my characters in on twitter. While this may not seem like a
huge defeat on a social media platform (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, etc.), it was
when I began catching myself making these same mistakes on graded assignments that I realized
there was a serious complication occurring. This problem did not only exist in my writing, but
also in the compositions of fellow students, peers, and even family members working on college
In my opinion, there is an epidemic going on in the literacy world right now, beginning
and ending with the way people choose to write their words on social media. We slowly forget
how to spell, forget how to use proper grammar, and even forget how to write a simple school
paper using the writing techniques we have been engrained with since kindergarten. To cure this
literacy disease, we must become more thoughtful in our simple day – to – day writings, which
ultimately affect the way we write in the professional world. With more time and consciousness

put into these spellings and correct usage of grammar, I believe the problem will slowly begin to
be eliminated.
