Gas Law Applications

▪ There are two main types of gases used in scuba diving,
Nitrox and Pressurized Air

▪ When you are recreational diving you use pressurized

air

▪ When you are tech diving and deep diving you use
Nitrox gas
SCUBA DIVING ▪ While diving, ambient pressure is 1 atm and it increases
by 1 atm every time the diver descends 10 meters in
depth
▪ Formula:
▪ 4atm x 1L=I ATM X V2
▪ Boyles Law applies to the air pressure
▪ As the pressure increases, the volume of the gas in the
tank will decrease
▪ Henry's Law
▪ Solubility of a liquid is directly proportional to the
SCUBA DIVING pressure of gas
▪ As depth decreases, the amount of gas dissolved in the
divers blood will also increase

▪ Gay Lussac's Law

▪ As the temperature gets colder, the air in the scuba
tank deflates
▪ Contain pressurized carbon dioxide gas each one (600
psi) and those PSI are released when you chew which
makes the popping sound

▪ Invented in 1956
▪ Your saliva dissolves it allowing pressurized CO2 to
POPROCKS escape
▪ Is a mixture of sugar, lactose, corn syrup, water, and
food coloring
▪ In 1979 there were rumors going around that pop rocks
caused a child to explode
