FUN FACTS ABOUT CINCO DE MAYO!
A lot of Americans celebrate Cinco De Mayo with
margaritas, beer, and burritos as a way to celebrate
Mexican-American culture but few actually know the
history of the date and what it means for Mexican
independence.

The Fifth of May celebrates the Mexican Army’s

victory of the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.
The French occupied Mexico and brought a large force
of 6,000 to attack the Mexican forts of Loreto and
Guadalupe. The outmanned Mexican forces
overpowered the French and the victory created a huge
boost in morale of the Mexican Army and people,
establishing a sense of unity and patriotism. “Battle of
Cinco De Mayo” is not observed as a national holiday in
Mexico, but public schools are generally closed
nationwide. In Puebla, parades and other
commemorative events take place, including
reenactments with French soldiers in traditional dress.

In the United States, Cinco De Mayo has become a

celebration of Mexican-American heritage with an
emphasis on food, culture, and music. So, next time you take a sip of tequila, give a shout out to General Ignacio
Zaragoza who led his troops to battle at Puebla and helped to create an independent Mexico!
