Standard #5 Innovative Applications of Content

The teacher understands how to connect concepts and use different perspectives to
engage learners in critical/ creative thinking and collaborative problem solving related to
authentic local and global issues.

Standard in my own words

Understanding how to encourage students to make connections with what they’re
learning in class and what is going on around the world.

Description of Artifact
During my students teaching, students talked to me about creating a more hands on way
of teaching the judicial system. I came up with a mock judicial trial that allowed students
to get a hands on perspective about the judicial branch and how it actually works in a real
life situation.

Indicators
5 (b) Engages learners in applying content knowledge to real world problems through the
lens of interdisciplinary themes.

Rationale
I met this standard 5 (b) because I was able to engage my students in content knowledge
that was connected through real world problems and applications like the judiciary system.
This was one of my most successful lessons. My students were really engaged in
learning how the court system worked and how they could make a difference in their
communities as they got older.
