Dear Hiring Manager,

I was excited to see your job opening for an Measurement Science & Engineering Clerical Union
Undergrad Year Round and I hope to be invited for an interview.

Having recently studying abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark at Aalborg University Copenhagen and
working in a project team with a company named IVISYS I believe I have the punctuality,
responsiveness, and thoroughness that you desire. In my experience in a project team my
communication skills had to be clear and concise to communicate our ideas to one another. Also I have
the experience of working with CAD software such as SolidWorks, PTC Creo, and Fusion 360 alongside
some programming in MATLAB, Python, and C++.

I have two years of volunteer experience as a front desk attendant at San Juan Regional Medical Center
(SJRMC) in Farmington NM. While volunteering at SJRMC my responsibilities included answering
incoming phone calls, directing visitors to the correct location in the hospital, escorting visitors to the
correct department, delivering flowers and presents to patients, working with fellow volunteers and
ambassadors, and operating a computer to find patients within the hospital, all while maintaining the
patients privacy (HIPAA). I demonstrated the ability to handle tasks in a fast paced and ever-changing
environment.

I have 15 months of experience working at Best Buy as a Merchandising/Inventory Specialist. There I

am responsible for unloading product off of the shipment trucks, stocking shelves, assisting customers
and ensuring the customer’s experience was a pleasant as it possibly could be.

Alongside this, I previously worked with the Youth Conservation Corporation for 2 summers as a Youth
Worker. My responsibilities here were to work with my Team Leaders and fellow Youth Workers, mostly
in landscaping jobs. An example this past summer was xeriscaping “islands” in a parking lot. I
demonstrated the ability to work with others and keep an open mind about other’s opinions all while
getting a common goal accomplished.

I am confident that I can offer you the customer service, communication, and problem-solving skills
that you are seeking. Feel free to call me anytime on my cell to arrange an interview. Thank you for your
time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Lucais Martin

Date: February, 12 2018

To: Crystal Zanders

From: Lucais Martin

Subject: 1:3 Assignment

I chose this internship at Sandia because I want to get an entry level position at Sandia
National Labs. Since this position is for undergraduate Engineering students I believe I
have a good chance of getting it with my past experience. I would really like to get an
internship with Sandia because it is a very highly regarded place to get an internship
since it is a nationally recognized entity. Also I know it is a very highly competitive place
among interns but I at least feel accomplished for trying my best on my application for
the position.

The most challenging part of the is project for me was formatting my cover letter and
resume to be best suited for this position. I went to Sandia’s booth at the Career fair on
the 8th of February. They were impressed by what I had on my resume and I know it
was the formatting that helped. As we discussed in class, they only read the first
portion of your resume. Since I put my semester abroad first, it was the first thing that
they saw and talked to me about which is exactly what I wanted. From there we only
talked about that and not my other jobs which I consider less important.

What surprised me about this project was physically talking to an engineer from Sandia
at the career fair. I was surprised by how optimistic he was about getting a position
based on my resume. I just hope I did everything I could to get the position. The people
I spoke to were very helpful and informative. I guess I was expecting them to be more
harsh saying something like, “well we do get a lot of applicants.” I don’t really know
why I was thinking this, I believe it was because I know how competitive this sort of
thing can be.

If I had to do anything differently I think I would apply for multiple positions at once. I
am planning on applying for more internship positions at Sandia after submitting this
assignment.

The feedback I received from my classmates was exactly what I expected. They found
little grammatical and other errors that I would have never caught. They provided the
constructive criticism that I was expecting and to do this sort of peer reviewing in
person is what I believe made it so worthwhile. Physically talking to someone about
your and their resume’s is very nice because you can discuss exactly what you think is
good and not so good about their documents. I agreed with all of the feedback I
received from my classmates, it wasn’t irrational or anything like that. I think they
provided me the best possible sort of feedback I could have received.

I feel a lot more confident in the job hunting process because of this assignment and
after going to the career fair. The most important step to getting a position is getting
yourself out there in the job market and submitting applications. Every single one is a
learning experience.
