This lesson plan is for a 3rd grade narrative non-fiction reading lesson about salt marshes. The students will watch a video introducing salt marshes, read the book "A Day in the Salt Marsh", and complete a KWL graphic organizer about the animals found in salt marshes. 1) Objective: Ask and answer questions about what is read. Draw conclusions and make inferences about the text. 2) Standards/Essential Question(s): Can I describe the characteristics of a narrative nonfiction? 3) Instructional Plan/Process: ● Show video on what a Salt Marsh is ● Introduction: ○ Ask anyone if they know what a Salt MArsh is after watching the video ○ Introduce book as a narrative nonfiction ■ Have the students discuss with their partners what makes something a narrative nonfiction ■ Ask a few kids to share (the answers should be: illustrations, facts, tells a story) ● During lesson: ○ Tell the class to listen to get the gist and build their understanding of the text first ■ Tell students to make graphic organizer on their own paper ○ Tell them to think about certain facts they hear about the animals in the book ○ After the first first time I read the book, have the students record some facts in the first column of their charts ■ Have them talk to their partners about what they wrote ■ Have a few share ● Guided practice: ○ Reread each page and touch on any facts that were not talked about as a class ■ Give examples on how to complete the first column ● Have the students talk to their partners about what they learned and then share 4) Materials/Equipment Needed: A Day in the Salt Marsh, KWL graphic organizer, informational articles on the animals in the Salt Marsh 5) Accomodations: Some students find it hard to pay attention so it is important to use interesting, engaging lessons when teaching. Some students also have trouble finding key info, so they need supervision and assistance at the stations 6) Assessment: Their KLW charts were my assessment on productivity and understanding of the lesson. The students answered questions and shared what they learned from the articles to the class. 7) Time required to teach the lesson: The lesson will need around 45 minutes.
