The Power Novato Microgrid Project proposes constructing a microgrid on Mt. Burdell to power the city of Novato, California. The microgrid would utilize solar panels, wind turbines, and battery storage. It is estimated that 30 wind turbines producing 1825 kWh each, 100 solar panels facing east and 200 facing west and 492 facing south, and iron-based battery storage could generate around 135% of Novato's monthly electricity needs of 59,118 kWh. The total estimated cost of the project is $1,879,322.

Kenney. Overall Electricity Use ● Commercial activities in Novato use about 5,532 kWh/month is the kWh/month number of kilowatt ● Novato residents usually use 573 kWh/month hours used in a month ● Industries use 53,013 kWh/month for industrial needs
● In total, about 59,118 kWh/month are used in
Novato. Location
To provide a strong advantage, we
plan to construct our Microgrid on Mt.
Burdell. Not only is there lots of free
space, but there are higher wind levels
at this elevation, which would enable
the wind turbines to work more
effectively. Solar
Solar Power is power generated by harnessing the sun’s rays that
shine on the earth. We would do this by using solar panel systems. They would cost $8.70 per watt, so 4 kilowatts cost will be $34,800. The panels will be facing South, East, and West. There will be 100 panels facing East, 200 facing West, and 492 facing South. This would have a cost of $221,400. Wind
Wind power is the use of wind or air through a turbine to generate
energy. This form of creating energy is green because it uses no fossil fuels. They are greatly renewable because as long as there is wind, there is power. We will have 30 10kW capacity turbines. The price would be about $48,000-$65,000 per wind turbine and each turbine would produce about 1825 kWh. Electricity Storage
We will store our over generated energy in
ESS long-duration batteries. This battery uses an
iron-based electrolyte to produce over 20,000
cycles of power with very little to no maintenance.
The batteries are also supposed to stay stable for
an unlimited number of deep-cycle charge and
discharge cycles with zero degradation.
Energy Transportation Like most microgrids, our microgrid will use underground high voltage wires. We estimate that we will need about 2 miles of wire for our grid, giving us a cost of $7,392. Total Cost The total cost of everything, including the maintenance cost which would end up being about $10,500 because you need to clean the solar panels once every six months,
would be $1,879,322. Overgeneration
Our grid generates extra energy in case
anything happens. Each month, we generate about 135% of what we need to power the city of Novato. Thanks for listening!
