It’s been almost one year since FDOT launched Tampa Bay Next.
In the next few weeks, we’ll be sending you a report
summarizing our activities over the past year. As you can see
from the slide, we’ve been doing a lot of outreach, and we’ve
received some really good input from the community. That
input isn’t sitting in a document on a shelf. We’re using the
feedback that we get every day to help our planners and
engineers create better transportation solutions.

2
Here are some of the actions we’ve taken based on the input we
received.

• We’ve removed express lanes from consideration on I-275 north of

downtown Tampa.
• We developed additional Downtown Interchange options that
drastically reduce the potential Right of Way impacts. We’re also
looking at shorter-term operational improvements for the
interchange.

For reference:
Option A – Full rebuild with ramps to I-275 North (TIS/TBX footprint) – ROW estimate
between 170-190 parcels
Option B – Full rebuild without ramps to I-275 North – ROW estimate between 130-
150 parcels
Option C – Existing interchange with Elevated Express Lanes to the south – ROW
estimate between 30-50 parcels

3
Option D – Existing interchange with Elevated Express Lanes to the north – ROW
estimate between 60-80 parcels

3
• We funded HART’s $2.5 million street-level Bus Rapid Transit
study along Nebraska, Florida, and Fowler.
• We advanced funding for the Heights Mobility Study to
improve safety and mobility on Florida Ave. and Tampa St.
• We extended the Fowler Ave. Multimodal Study limits to I-
75.

4
• We made adjustments to express lane access points in the
Westshore/West Tampa area.
• We developed operational improvements on I-275 to relieve
the bottleneck coming off the Howard Frankland Bridge and
another one on Southbound SR 60 around the airport.

5
A lot of the feedback we’ve received is about transit, and we
want this board and the public to know that we have committed
to be a transit partner with the local community. We’ve
increased our investment in transit studies and looked for ways
to leverage highway investment and roadway facilities for
transit. But transit decisions have to be made at the local level,
and they have to include funding.

These are the 3 ways FDOT invests in Transit:

#1 – by providing funding for studies and research

#2 – Formula-based grants (which are generally ongoing
sources)
#3 – Competitive grants (which are generally project based)

6
As you know, we have studies underway for multiple sections of
the interstate. A lot of our updates to this board have focused
on the SEIS area. We’re continuing to conduct outreach for the
SEIS, and we’ll host a large public workshop this December.

But for this update, we want to spend some time discussing the
I-75 corridor. I mentioned earlier that we removed express lanes
from consideration on I-275 north of downtown Tampa. That
decision was based on input asking us to consider I-75 as the
regional express lane corridor.

7
We have two studies underway evaluating express lanes on I-75.

8
We also have several short and mid-term projects on I-75.

1. Adds a new 12 ft SB I-75 deceleration lane and 12 ft outside shoulder and widens
the SB exit ramp to I-4 from single lane to a dual lane ramp: Advanced Letting in
May 2018 (Design FM #428957-1)
2. Extends Northbound On-Ramp: Currently Under Construction (Design FM
#428954-1)
3. Improves Northbound On and Off Ramps along the Interstate and Provides a
Diverging Diamond Interchange @ MLK Blvd.: Currently under design. Anticipate
Letting 2022 (Design FM #42951-1)
4. Reconstruct a new dual-lane NB I-75 on-ramp and add a new NB I-75 auxiliary
lane (3800 ft beyond gore): Letting May 2018 (Design FM #428953-1)
5. New NB I-75 barrier-separated ramp; reconstructs loop ramp; widening, milling,
and resurfacing on SR 60: Letting May 2018 (Design FM #428955-1)
6. Widen/reconstruct SB I-75 C-D road; new SB I-75 to C-D road ramp; reconstruct
EB SR 60 to SB I-75 ramp; widening, milling, and resurfacing on SR 60: Letting May
2018 (Design FM #428956-1)
7. Extends the SB off-ramp, widens Big Bend Road to 6 lanes through the

9
interchange, and adds turn lanes at the ramp intersections with Big Bend Road
resulting in triple left turns and dual right turns from the SB off-ramp, and dual
left turns from the NB ramp: Letting TBD – working with County (Design FM
#424513-2)
8. RRR project 12.5 miles from Manatee County Line to Big Bend (CR 672): Letting in
2019 (Design FM #437312-1)

9
One of the I-75 projects is a Diverging Diamond Interchange at
MLK Blvd.

We’re partnering with Hillsborough County and THEA on the Roads to
Success II Industry Forum on May 9.
Our Procurement, Construction, and Supportive Services team will be
there with information about how to do business with FDOT and how to
become certified as a DBE.
They’ll also be providing information about bidding on upcoming
construction projects, including some of the ones we just talked about on
I-75.
