TExES Competency

Competency 001: The teacher understands human development processes and applies this

knowledge to plan instruction and ongoing assessment that motivate students and are responsive

to their developmental characteristics and needs.

- Being aware of the human development processes will allow the teacher to know how

a student learns and the best ways to teach. This also can help by making age

appropriate lessons and activities. For example, a younger student could learn the

water cycle by coloring. An older student may benefit more by doing a project.

Competency 002: The teacher understands student diversity and knows how to plan learning

experiences and design assessments that are responsive to differences among students and that

promote all students’ learning.

- Students bring a wide range of viewpoints to the classroom which creates challenges

for the teacher. A teacher must know that all students are different and learn in

different ways. Creating lessons that meet all learning styles will create the most

effective learning environment for all students.

Competency 003: The teacher understands procedures for designing effective and coherent

instruction and assessment based on appropriate learning goals and objectives.

Neal 2

- A teacher must understand what the student’s goals and objectives are and how to

effectively teach that student. Understanding procedures for creating lessons will help

meet the student’s needs and allow them to grow. Also, catering to different learning

styles and disabilities helps you set appropriate learning goals and objectives.

Competency 004: The teacher understands learning processes and factors that impact student

learning and demonstrates this knowledge by planning effective, engaging instruction and

appropriate assessments.

- A teacher needs to understand that many outside factors impact how the student

learns in the classroom. A teacher should incorporate ways to reach all students on all

levels. A successful classroom provides engaging instruction and appeals to all

learning styles.

Competency 005: The teacher knows how to establish a classroom climate that fosters learning,

equity and excellence and uses this knowledge to create a physical and emotional environment

that is safe and productive.

- A classroom is a place to learn but it is also a place a student should feel comfortable

and safe. A teacher should make their students feel equal to their peers and allow

them to find themselves. The curriculum should be followed but the teacher should

also allow space for creativity.

Competency 006:

The teacher understands strategies for creating an organized and productive learning

environment and for managing student behavior.

Neal 3

- When teaching younger aged students, you must teach an interactive and fun lesson

while maintaining the classroom. Having rules in place that each student is aware of

is a way to manage student behavior. Keeping your classroom in order and organized

will improve student learning as well.

Competency 007:

The teacher understands and applies principles and strategies for communicating effectively in

varied teaching and learning contexts.

- To teach effectively, you must communicate effectively with your students. This can

be done through creating lessons that cater to all three learning styles. Allowing your

students to have a voice if they do not understand provides opportunities for you to

explain more.

Competency 008:

The teacher provides appropriate instruction that actively engages students in the learning

process.

- The teacher provides instruction using all learning styles. The teacher incorporates

technology and hands-on learning when appropriate. When teaching younger students

using short lessons with frequent breaks will help keep students engaged.

Competency 009:

The teacher incorporates the effective use of technology to plan, organize, deliver and evaluate

instruction for all students.

- Using technology in a classroom is so common and useful now. The use of

technology can improve planning a lesson, delivering a lesson and reaching all three

learning styles. Most students benefit and are more attentive when technology is

being used.

Competency 010:

The teacher monitors student performance and achievement; provides students with timely, high-

quality feedback; and responds flexibly to promote learning for all students.

to insure they’re getting the help they need in weak areas is imperative.. Also,

keeping in contact with parents on good grades and notifying when there is a subject

that may become difficult.

Competency 011:

The teacher understands the importance of family involvement in children’s education and

knows how to interact and communicate effectively with families.

- The teacher must stay involved with student’s families. It is good to know home

situations and if there are concerns to be watching for while the child is at school.

Sending home a weekly or monthly news letter is a great way to effectively

communicate with the student’s families.

Competency 012:

The teacher enhances professional knowledge and skills by effectively interacting with other

members of the educational community and participating in various types of professional

activities.

workshops. Networking with other teachers can help you grow and learn valuable

skills for your students. It is very important to never stop learning as a teacher.
