ICAO Guideline Compliance for Anemometer Masts

ICAO Annex 3 SARPs Para 4.5 call for wind sensors should be appropriately sited according to local conditions so
that the observations are representative of conditions along the runway. The degree of frangibility required under
ICAO Annex14 depends on the proposed location of the AWS. Masts placed outside the Transitional Surface do not
need to be frangible. Suitable MTECH Systems supplied masts include the 911-GM, the 911-RSM and the 911-HM

If the AWS must be placed between the Transitional Surface and the Inner Transitional Surface, the AWS can be
supplied on a mast such as the 911-FM. The 911-FM Frangible Mast meets the ICAO’s stringent frangibility SARPS.

Even AWS equipment mounted on a frangible mast should not be located inside the Inner Transitional surface or so
that any part of the mast enters the Obstacle free zone.

It is recommended that modern frangible masts used for anemometer installation be located 78 meters or
more from the runway centerline.
