Online Projects, Collaboration Sites and Publishing Opportunities

Lesson Idea Name: Migrations Patterns of Animals

Content Area: Science

Grade Level(s): 3rd

Content Standard Addressed:

S3CS8. Students will understand important features of the process of scientific inquiry.

Technology Standard Addressed:

3. Knowledge Constructor

Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity:

Journey North

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom (Minimum 2 paragraph overview):

The students will learn about what migration is. They will then learn which animals migrate where at what
parts of the year. We will spend a couple hours learning this information about the animals and once we
learn more about migration, we will make educated guesses on what our data might say.

After making inferences, the students will collect real data of the migration patterns of animals. After doing
this consistently for a month, we will add our data into the Journey North website. The students will then be
able to read other student’s findings and compare the differences between different reigons.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?

Just a computer is needed for this.

Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).

a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: Input their data into a website and share their information with the world.

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): Tracking original migration data.

c. Higher-order thinking: Hypothesizing about their findings before collecting the data.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: The students
will publish their work on the Journey North website to share with other studnets.

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies:

I would make sure not to give any personal information about the students, including their names, ages, or
pictures.

Reflective Practice:

I think the students would have a blast doing this. It would enrich their learning of this concept
tremendously. I could further this lesson by doing it again with a different animal and comparing how the
data is different and how it is the same.
