Lesson Idea Name: Invertebrate Fairy Tale

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 5th
Content Standard Addressed: S5L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to group organisms using
scientific classification procedures.
a. Develop a model that illustrates how animals are sorted into groups (vertebrate and invertebrate) and how
vertebrates are sorted into groups (fish, amphibian, reptile, bird, and mammal) using data from multiple sources.

ELAGSE5W3: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive
details, and clear event sequences.

Technology Standard Addressed: 3- Knowledge Constructor

Selected Technology Tool:

☒ Movie (list application): iMovie
☐ Audio (list application):

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level):

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): The iMovie offers options for perception by appealing to both auditory
and visual learners with picture, video, and audio components. There is also embedded support for
vocabulary within the iMovie to help students understand the meaning of vertebrate and invertebrate. The
teacher will guide information processing by providing an interactive sort that will guide new understandings
of animals that are vertebrates and animals that are invertebrates. Students will learn more about
vertebrates and invertebrates by creating a fairy tale using different options for organizational methods such
as story webs or outlining tools. The teacher will give students a checklist to enhance students capacity for
progress monitoring. The teacher will provide students with access to tools and assistive technologies to
support writing and provide students with options for expression using multiple tools for composition such as
spellchecks, sentence starters, and so on. The teacher will provide differentiated feedback to students as they
compose their story to offer graduated levels of support. The writing project will foster students use of
imagination and creativity by giving them options.

Lesson idea implementation: The teacher will use the iMovie to introduce a study on animal classification.
After students watch the iMovie, the teacher will lead a discussion about the classification of animals into two
groups: vertebrates and invertebrates. The teacher will provide students with pictures of animals from the
iMovie and ask them to sort them into animals with a backbone or spinal column and animals without a
backbone. Once students are familiar with classifying animals into vertebrates and invertebrates, the teacher
will give students a writing project.

The teacher will tell students to choose a fairytale to rewrite or create an original fairytale using an
invertebrate as the protagonist and a vertebrate as the antagonist or vice versa. Students will gather
information about their animals to include in their fairytale using available resources. The teacher will provide
students with an organizer to aid in their planning and a checklist to guide them through the writing process.
The teacher will conference with small groups and individual students to provide feedback throughout the
writing process. When students finish their story, they will present their story to the class.

Importance of technology: The multimedia authoring tool is critical to the project because it introduces the
classification of animals into vertebrates and invertebrates. The project could be completed without this
technology, but the content would not be as engaging without it. Devices such as computers and tablets will
be used during this learning experience to help student research the animals in their story that are
invertebrates and the animals that are vertebrates. Students will also be using these tools to write and
illustrate their stories using publishing software.

Inspiration (optional): I borrowed the invertebrate fairy tale writing activity from
https://www.georgiastandards.org/Frameworks/GSO%20Frameworks/5%20Science%20Classification%20Inve
rtebrate%20Fairy%20Tale.pdf.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: There are issues Internet Safety that could arise during this learning
experience because students will be using the Internet to gather information about the animals they chose. I
will minimize risks by creating rules and procedures for students to follow while they are using the Internet at
school. I will also establish expectations for using the Internet before students begin their research. I will also
make sure to follow common Internet Safety policies and Acceptable Use policies.

Reflective Practice: I think these activities could impact student learning of vertebrates and invertebrates by
giving them an opportunity to be creative and learn about the difference between the two groups. To extend
this lesson, students could create an iMovie for their fairytale or read their invertebrate fairy tales to a first or
second grade classroom to contribute to their students of animals. The teacher could also invite scientists
who work with animals into the classroom to talk to students about the purpose of animal classification.
