Discussion

The theory of Boyle’s law states that the pressure and volume of a gas have an inverse
relationship when the temperature is held constant. This can be seen from this equation that
𝑚𝑅𝑇
shows the pressure – volume relation 𝑃 = 𝑉
. As the volume decreases, the pressure will then

increases. The factor that affects that to happen is the collision rate of the gas particles. When
the volume is decreasing, the gas particles collide more frequent with each other and also collide
with the surface of the container. Thus, this leads the pressure inside of the container to be
increased.

Boyle’s law also states that the product of pressure and volume of the gas will always
constant in the isothermal process. Based on this experiment that we have carried out, we
observed the results and see that the pressure is increasing when the volume is reduced during
the compression. During expansion, the volume increment causing the pressure to be decreasing.
The results have been tabulated and being plotted into graphs. The curve line of the graphs
plotted have summarized my explanations earlier. From the theory that we learned, the product
of pressure and volume in isothermal process should be constant. However, when we calculated
the products, there are some inconsistency in the results tabulated. This may happen due to the
temperature that are slightly changes while we manipulated the volume. Besides that, the
inconsistency occurred may be due to the leaking of the container that are being occupied by the
gas. The products of pressure and volume we calculated in this experiment are not consistent
because the gas in our experiment is real gas while in the theory is applicable for the ideal gas.

Conclusion

The Boyle’s Law experiment that we have done is successfully accomplished. We manage
to determine the relationship between pressure and volume by operating this experiment sets and
undergo the procedure correctly. The results that we get are satisfied with the statement of Boyle’s
Law. Other than that, we also able to discuss the experiment theoretically and experimentally and
observe the changes and comprehend the PV diagram plotted. We prepared a proper lab report
and work as a team in order to achieve all the objectives. Even though there are some
inconsistency in our results which is the product of PV, but we can identify the relevant reasons
and the possibilities that affect the experiment to be done imperfectly. The relation of pressure
and volume in this experiment can also been see by us in our daily life. One of the application is
while we want to fill in the air in our bicycle’s tire by using the manual air compressor.
