This course introduces geographic information systems (GIS) and how it can be applied to emergency management. The course objectives are to explain how information technologies are used in emergency management, identify best practices for risk assessment and hazards, understand how to use GIS in emergency situations, determine data needs for emergency response, and complete a research project using geospatial analysis. Students will learn how GIS is used and how to operate GIS software.

This course introduces location-based computer technology emphasizing geographic information systems (GIS) as it applies to emergency management. Required for major. Course Learning Objectives Explain how information technologies may be effectively used in all phases of emergency management. Identify information technology best practices being applied in hazard processes and risk assessment. Understand how to effectively apply geospatial technologies of Geographic Information Systems in an operational emergency management environment. Determine emergency management needs for information and data products and develop strategies to accommodate those needs in a timely and comprehensive manner. Develop and complete a research project related to hazard analysis using geospatial technology beginning with problem identification and concluding with results documentation and presentation.
What I Learned – In Sum
Overall I learned a great deal in the course information technology and emergency management. I learned what and how GIS is utilized. I also learned how to operate and run a GIS program. This will be very beneficial to me seeing as one of my regular duties an my internship this fall will be working on a GIS program.
