DOMAIN 1: PLANNING & PREPARATION
Main Focus:
This lesson focus on the transition between picture graphs and bar graphs. Students will learn about how to convert a
picture graph into a bar graph. Also, they will learn how to draw a bar graph.
Brief Context: 18 students. Previously, they have learned about how to read and draw picture graphs.
Prerequisite Knowledge/Skills: Students need to know how to draw and read a picture graph.
Objectives:
 Students will be able to draw a bar graph.
 Students will be able to convert a picture graph into a bar graph.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.D.10
Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories.
Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems1using information presented in a bar graph.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.OA.A.1
Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding
to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using
drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.1
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.OA.B.2
Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.2 By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of
two one-digit numbers.

Assessment:
Formative: The teacher will ask several questions to check students’ understanding of content. The teacher will monitor
each student’s work during the lesson.
Summative: The teacher will check each student’s answers on p.235-6.
Worldview Integration: God created this world. For us, it is important to be aware of the world that we’re living in.
Learning about graphs will help our students to learn more about the world. It will help them to understand the world in
better ways.

-The teacher will work with whole class. Students will interact with each other and with the teacher while they learn about
bar graphs. By drawing a bar graph based on their interests, the students will build relationship with each other.

CONDUCT MANAGEMENT:

Students will raise their hand if they want to say something or have questions. They students will remain in their seats
during the lesson. The teacher will ask questions to the students to keep their attention. The teacher will demonstrate the
expected behaviors to the students.
Strategies you intend to use to redirect individual students:
The teacher will ask questions to each student so that they can have an equal opportunity to talk.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:
The students will sit at the desks. They will work individually and face the white board to follow teacher’s instruction.
The middle lights should be turned off so that the students can easily see the screen.

Motivation/Opening/Intro:
1. Teacher begin the lesson using a google slide.
“Recently, we learned about how to read and draw picture graphs. Do you think there is only one type of graph in the
world? There are various different types of graphs in the world. (Picture graphs, dot graph, bar graph, pie graph) Then,
Miss Choi. why do we have to learn about graphs? What do you think? Why is it important to learn about graphs? It helps
us to organize the information and present data in a quick way. It is easier to get information when we just look at a graph
rather than when we look at a long list of number data. That’s why we’re learning how to read and draw graphs.“
Development:
2. “Today, we’re going to learn how to convert a picture graph to a bar graphs. (Show pictures)
Have students turn to p. 235.
3. Draw a data table
-What do we need before we start drawing a graph? We need data table.
-Now, we’re going to create a data table of our favorite pizza. There are four categories. (Plain cheese, pepperoni,
mushroom, chicken) Raise your hand if _____ is your favorite pizza.
4. Draw a picture graph
-Now, we have our data table, so we can draw a picture graph.
-Write title: favorite kinds of Pizza
Types of pizza. Each smile represents one person.
Make sure that your picture graph matches with our survey.
5. Draw a bar graph
-Now, it’s time to convert a picture graph to a bar graph.
-Fist step is same. Write down the title.
-Next, write ______.
A bar graph use bars to show data. Each box represents one person, so let’s write down the numbers on the bottom so that
we can easily get the data from the graph. 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10
-If each box represents a person, how many bars we need to color for ____pizza?
-Fill out the rest of the bar graphs and solve problems on the next page.
