Entrepreneurship Continuing Education

Duration of Unit: One Month Number of classes per week: Duration of each session: One
Two hour

Unit details: Unit one Introduction of Entrepreneurship

Purpose of Unit:

Upon completion, the student will be able to read and understand the entrepreneurial mindset, cite
the diverse characteristics of an entrepreneur and determine the best practices of a successful
entrepreneur.

Goals:

Students should be able to:

1. Understand the term “Entrepreneurship”


2. Recognize the difference between Entrepreneurship and Intrapreneurship and small business
management
3. Understand what it entails to be an Entrepreneur on St. Maarten, in the Caribbean and in
developing countries around the world.
4. Understand the impact of cultural diversity in entrepreneurship
5. Know the characteristics of a successful entrepreneur
6. Understand the requirements needed to be a successful entrepreneur

Specific Instructional Objectives:

Students will:

1.1 Define the term “Entrepreneurship”


1.2 Explain the nature and growth of entrepreneurship

1.3 List the features of an entrepreneurship.

2.1 List the characteristics differences between entrepreneurship, Intrapreneurship and small
business management.

2.2 Describe why intrapreneurship is an important part of entrepreneurship

2.3 Define what small business management means

3.1 Outline the steps that is needed to be an entrepreneur on St. Maarten

3.2 Outline the steps that is needed to be an entrepreneur in the EC islands


3.3 Memorize the American-Dutch treaty and how it relates to being an entrepreneur in the US
Virgin Islands

3.4 Distinguish the main components that one will need to be an entrepreneur in developing
countries around the world.

3.5 List three entrepreneurs from St. Maarten, three from the Caribbean and 9 from developing
countries around the world.

4.1 Understand what cultural diversity is.

4.2 Examine the local cultures represented on the island and how it impacts business on the island

4.3 Construct ways to deal with the cultural diversity in a multi-cultural company

5.1 Memorize the characteristics of a successful entrepreneur

6.1 Compare a successful entrepreneur to an unsuccessful entrepreneur

6.2 Understand your personal characteristics and how it can impact your ability to be a successful
entrepreneur.

6.3 Distinguish individual personalities within a company

6.4 Interpret personalities and characteristics that will enhance the development of the company

Content Activities/ Procedures

1. Survey test on entrepreneurship

A. The origins of entrepreneurship

2. Introductory video and discussion on


entrepreneurship.
3. Each student will submit a one page
report on the origins of
entrepreneurship, the progress of
entrepreneurship and their personal
views on what they have found.

B. Entrepreneurship, Intrapreneurship, Small 4. Invite an entrepreneur to discuss the


business management details of his business
5. Discuss strategic innovation and how it
applies to intrapreneurs
6. Work on personality profiles within the
class that can identify individual
strengths and weaknesses. This will be
done using a personality test program
online.

7. Create ‘companies’ within the class that


will further develop into small
businesses.
8. Invite an owner of a company that
currently engages in intrapreneurship
9. Discuss with the class the specifications
of a small business
10. List the core job descriptions of the
management team
11. Construct the job descriptions for the
management team of your company.

Exit activity content: 31. Each group will assemble and present
to the class their management team.
Bringing together information shared in the 32. Each presentation should include the
unit method used to select the individual
members for the tasks given to them
within the company.
33. Each member from the management
team will highlight their specific part in
the company. What their role will be in
the company and how they plan on
making the company successful
34. Presentations will be done face to face
using “Power Point” to make their
presentations.
