Abstract

Multidisciplinary Engineering Service in Community (MESIC) 2018 was basically a

programme which was an engineering service learning programme involving engineering
students in a multidisciplinary approach such as Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering,
Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. This programme was conducted for 12
days which are from 20th January until 31st January 2018. The main venue of this programme
to be carried out was at Centre for Student Innovation, Kolej Tunku Canselor. The main
objective of this programme is to study the problem issues that found in Kampung Pendas Laut
and the create an innovative solution to help local villagers to solve those issues. In order to
complete the design, my teammates and I need to cooperate with each other. Luckily, we
succeed to complete our product in the time given and sent to our targeted family. Lastly, I
would like to express my appreciation to Dr. Adnan, Miss Rawdhah, facilitators, technicians
from TVET lab and all my teammates.

Proposed Project

1.1 Introduction

Multidisciplinary Engineering Service in Community (MESIC) 2018 was basically a

programme which was an engineering service learning programme involving engineering
students in a multidisciplinary approach such as Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering,
Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. This programme was conducted for 12
days which were from 20th January until 31st January 2018. The main venue of this programme
to be carried out was at Centre for Student Innovation, Kolej Tunku Canselor. MESIC 2018
programme contained 5 elements which were student centered engineering design, community
involvement, partnership and multidisciplinary. This programme was carried out in one whole
day in the period of the programme which was from early morning until night. Apart from that,
this programme only involved 20 students from different faculties and we were divided into 5
members per team. 5 of the members are came from different faculties because we need
knowledge from different field to solve the problem issues. In order to complete the task, we
were provided by enough facilities such as strong internet connection which was convenient
for us to find any information that related to our project. Other than that, we were guided by
some lecturers, staffs from laboratory and facilitators when we were carrying out this
programme such brainstorming, design product and the process of making products. At the
same time, our safety always had been made sure by the organizer from time to time in order
to avoid some incidents or accidents to occur. Basically, this programme helped students to
improve the soft skills such as communication skill, problem solving skill, critical-thinking
skill, as well as hands on skill. Each of the members were requested to do reflection journal by
every day in order to reflect what had been learnt by us for each day.

6
1.2 Project Background

Basically, this project was based on the condition of working and daily life of the
villagers who work as fisherman in Kampung Pendas Laut. Thus, we visited Kampung Pendas
Laut on 23rd January 2018. Before we went there, we prepared some questions that might can
use to ask the local villagers about the problem they faced in their working and daily life. In
order to identify the problem that faced by the local villagers, we used face by face method
which is interview and observation method to detect the problem issues. We recorded down
the conversation with the local villagers when we were interviewing them about the problem
that that faced. By doing this, we watched back the video that we recorded and brainstormed
what we product design we can do for them in order to solve their problem. Apart from that,
we also took photos to refer back when we did our discussion between team members. On the
other hand, Pn. Mary is one of the person who we interviewed. Based on the interview and
observation, we found that the nets were not stored and hang properly and systematically. After
that, we asked Pn. Mary about the details of nets such as the types of nets, weight of nets and
physical properties of the nets in order to create a most suitable product design for Pn. Mary.
We were really appreciated because Pn. Mary was very patient to answer our questions and
showed us the ways she makes the nets. Thus, we decided to come out with an innovative
solution to help Pn. Mary to solve this daily problem.

1.3 Solution for Community Issues

After our interview and observation with the local villagers, we found that the problem
that mostly villagers face is improper ways to store and hang the nets. Thus, after our long
discussion, we came out an innovative solution for the problem. We went through quite many
designs before we finalized our final design. The first design for our solution is nets holder
with drawers. We did this design because we considered Pn. Mary can hang the nets when they
were wet and store the nets after the nets had been dried up. However, we found that this design
is not suitable for Pn. Mary to use because based on the interview, Pn. Mary told us that they
must dry up the wet nets outside the house since the wet nets have unpleasant smell. Thus, we
changed our idea to second design which is movable nets holder. We decided to cut the drawer
parts because we considered that movable nets holder must be easy for Pn. Mary to move.
However, this design still not our last design because after our presentation, panels gave us

7
some suggestions and we decided to change our design one more time. After our discussion,
finally we finalized our design which is trolley-nets holder. This is because from the suggestion
of the panels, they considered villagers in Kampung Pendas Laut need to move the heavy loads
such as nets, boxes and so on from the seaside to their house. In this condition, the panels
suggested us to change the base of the nets holder to the trolley. Finally, we came out with our
last design.

1.4 Project Goal

The main goal for this project is to create an innovative solution to make the life of
villagers become easier. Before we think out the solution, we need to understand the condition
of living life of villagers in Kampung Pendas Laut. At the same time, the goal of this project
included the improvement of skills of students because we need to solve the problem by our
own with the consultation from lecturers, staffs of the laboratory and facilitators from MESIC
2018.

1.5 Program Objectives

 To train student with various skills such as critical thinking skill which is one of the
criteria to overcome obstacle when designing and producing the product.
 To enhance student’s creativity and innovative by producing useful products to the
community.
 To apply the knowledge that gained from the theory class practically.
 To expose students with the ‘real world’ situations.
 To train students with hands-on working skill.

9
 To train students management skill such as time management to complete the project
and finance management.

1.6 Target Community

The target community is the villagers who work as a fisherman in Kampung Pendas
Laut, Gelang Patah. Basically, this village is divided into 3 lorong, which is Lorong Bebaru,
Lorong Api-Api, and Lorong. Berempang. Based on the information given by Pengerusi
Kampung Pendas Laut, the total families found in the village is 72 which includes 69 Malay
families and 3 Chinese families. On the other hand, based on the information given by the
villagers, we were informed that mostly villagers in Lorong Bebaru work as fisherman,
villagers in Lorong Api-Api work as factory workers and mostly villagers in Lorong
Berempang are senior citizens who are already retired from their work. Thus, we chose
villagers in Lorong Bebaru as our main target because our project focus on the innovative
solutions for the fisherman.

2.2 Solution of Project

Basically, the solution that we used to solve the problem is we designed a net holder.
This net holder is multi-purpose because it also can become a trolley. For the net holder
function, the user can hang the nets no matter the net is under dry or wet condition. Since the

27
net holder is movable, the user can hang their wet nets on the holder and dry up under the sun;
whereas if the net is already dried up, then users still can hang the nets on the holder, thus this
design is very convenient for users to use. At the same time, users can save a lot of time since
users no need to hang nets to other place, but only need to move the net holder into their house.
Another function of the net holder is it also can be a trolley. This is because the 2 stands on
right hand side are portable. In this condition, users can shorten the stands and the design will
become a trolley. Trolley can help users to move the heavy loads such as nets, boxes and so on
from the seaside to their house. Thus, by using this product, users can save energy, times as
well as move the loads efficiency.

2.3 Discussion

Our product, trolley-net holders has its own advantanges and disadvantages. The
advantage of our product is that this product is a multi-functional product which can hang the
nets and carry the nets from jetty to the house of users. The upper structure contains 2
cylindrical poles and each of the poles is holding hock which can hang the net on it. Other than
that, the lower structure of our product which is made up of fence can carry the nets. In this
condition, users can hang their nets neatly and at the same time can carry the nets easily, safety
and conveniently.

The advantage of our product is that the 2 poles cannot afford too heavy of the nets.
The 2 poles only can afford maximum 50kg of the nets. In addition, during making product,
we faced a problem which was the difficulties to find the suitable hook to hang the nets.
However, we succeed to find a suitable hook after doing surveys in Taman Universiti.

28
CHAPTER 3

PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION REPORT

3.1 Introduction

Trolley-nets holder is the finalized product of Dream Warriors team. Trolley-nets

holder is the combination of trolley and nets holder. We chose trolley-nets holder as our
finalized product because we wished to do a multi-purpose function product. Fortunately,
during the presentation of our first design, panels gave us a nice suggestion and we
combined our idea with idea from panels.

The important part of this programme started when we visited Kampung Pendas Laut
on 23rd January 2018. The main purpose that we went Kampung Pendas Laut is to do
survey and observation for the life problems that might be faced by the villagers. We spent
one whole day in Kampung Pendas Laut to gather the information from the villagers so
that we can create an innovative design that really can help the villagers. We achieved our
goals by interviewing villagers and observing the environment of Kampung Pendas Laut.

Based on our interview and observation, we found that there were some problem
issues faced by the villagers in Kampung Pendas Laut. However, we decided to focus on
the issue of improper storage and hanging of the nets. Thus, we started to brainstorm our
ideas and finally came out with an idea which is nets holder. But then, after our
presentation on Day 6, we decided to change our idea to trolley-nets holder. Everyone of
us agreed with this idea because from our angle, multi-purpose function product might
help villagers to solve 2 problem issues at the same time as trolley also one of the
consideration for our solution. This is good news for us because we can create a more
innovative product.

From Day 8, we started to make the products. Based on the tentative, we were given 3
days to complete our design. Thus, we cannot be relax for these 3 days in order to
complete our task in the given time.

29
3.2 Activity Report (Audio and Visual)

For Day 1, we started with the briefing section by Dr. Aznah. After that, we started to
do the group activities with our group members in order to recognise to each other. We were
being assigned to think out and present about our team’s name, logo and cheers. Lastly, we
decided to choose ‘Dream Warriors’ as our team’s name.

In the evening, we started with the ice-breaking section. The aim of this section is to
give chance to all the members in the group to know each other better by going through some
activities. In order to complete the given task, teamwork is very important in the group. In
this condition, we need to work together with each other and at the same time we can know
each other better.

30
On Day 2, we started with explorace section early in the morning. We were assigned
to move by our own group. We had to go through 4 stations which placed in different places.
Thus, we needed to move and find the station in order to complete the task. The games in
each station were interesting to play but the most important is that we need to have teamwork
in order to complete all the tasks. After we went through all the stations, we need to run back
to CSI and unfortunately we were the second last team to reach there. However, this does not
mean we are not good enough, this is because the meaning of explorace is let all the members
to familiar with each other and at the same time we can learn the importance of teamwork in
order to complete the most difficult task in this programme which is making product section.

At night, we attended the workshop about design education. Honestly, I felt very
grateful because can learnt some other knowledge from him which is different field with what
I am learning for my course in degree level. He is a caring and dedicated lecturer because He
shared his experience on how to make a good and useful product in order to contribute to our
communities. At the same time, he also reminded us that safety also is one of the important
element that must be considered when designing a product. In this section, he shared some
videos to us that related with his students which created a successful design in order to motivate
us to have a good idea.

On Day 3, we started our first activity of day 3 by attending the workshop that about
TRIZ. The speaker designed some games for us to play. This first game was guessing game.
For the guessing game, the speaker told me that in his mind had one animal but we need to ask
him question that he only can answered “Yes” or “No” in order to guess the animal successfully.
From my angle, I felt this game is very interesting because we need to brainstorm the
characteristics of an animal same goes to how we need to brainstorm our ideas on the product
design. The second activity for this section was we need to innovate the Chess Board into a
new game by changing the rules or adding something new into the chess. For my team, we
decided to combine with the original Chess Board. This game is easy to understand and is
suitable for all people to play.

The activity for night on Day 3 was the workshop about entrepreneurial education. In
this section, the speaker taught us the ways to do entrepreneurship and some tricks to success
if we wish to do our own business in our career. At the send of this section, we were requested
to design a poster by using mah-jong paper in order to present our product and persuade

31
“customers” to buy our product. Honestly, this workshop is very beneficial to me because I can
learn the ways to create the poster that can attract the attention from the customers.

On Day 4, the programme started begin with the important section which was the
visiting to Kampung Pendas Laut. We started our journey from UTM in the early of the
morning. Once we reached there, we were warmly welcomed by the Ketua Kampung. After
that, we explained the details and some problems that faced by them in their daily life. Then,
we started to visit the families in the Lorong Bebaru. We started to find our problem issues by
interviewing the local villagers and observing their surroundings. Luckily, we met a friendly
local villager who is Pn. Mary. She explained the difficulties that she faced during working and
daily life. We found that the nets were arranged messily in the house and it need a big space.
Lastly, we came out with an idea of making nets holder.

At night, we started to brainstorm the design. At first, we had our own different idea on
how to make our product. But, finally, we came out with a best design by the combination of
our ideas. In this section, facilitators helped us a lot because they gave many useful suggestions
to us.

For Day 5, we started to do the dimension for our design and plan what materials we
were going to use. After that, we did the survey on the price of the materials by using Google.
At night, an advisor came and gave us some suggestions on what should we improved for our
design. Then, we started to do the presentation slides for the preparation of the next day.

32
For Day 6, we were required to wear formal because we had presentation about our idea
on the product design. We are the third group to present our product design. Before the
presentation, we were dividing the slides that we are going to present. At the same time, I also
invited our targeted family who is Pn. Mary to come. Luckily, Pn. Mary and her husband came
before my group presented. After our presentation, panels gave us some ideas on how to
improve our product to a more useful and innovative product. Apart from that, we also asked
some suggestions from Pn. Mary.

At night, we came out with a more useful product design which is trolley-nets holder
after we digested all the suggestions from panels and Pn. Mary. Honestly, I am appreciated all
the suggestions from them because this make our product become multi-functional and useful.

For Day 7, in the morning, we finalized our product design and started to search some
places that we might go for purchasing the materials. Around 2 pm, we started our journey. In
this section, I am the treasurer for my team and at the same time I need to fetch my teammates
go all the places for purchasing the materials. Basically, we bought the materials smoothly
except for the hooks that need to hang the nets.

At night, I started to do the report while my remaining teammates started to do the

prototype. The purpose that we did the prototype is to let us have the idea to start doing our
product design.

33
For Day 8, before we started to do our product, we presented our product design to the
technicians in TVET lab. And at the same time, they gave us some suggestions on how to
improve our product design and which part we needed to do first. After their consultation, we
started to do our product. The first thing that we needed to do is cut the galvanized pipe into
the length we needed and do thread at the end of both sides of the pipe. Before we started to
do by our own, Encik Bashir demonstrated one time to us and he guided us when we were
cutting and doing the thread for the pipe.

At night, I continue to do the report, reflection journal and complete all the task that
required in the MESIC book.

For Day 9 and Day 10, we started to do the remaining part of our product. Basically, I
am the photographer for my team during product making section while Dayang Syairah is
videographer. Apart from that, Salman, Haitis and Farhan work together to complete the
product. Luckily, we managed to complete our product in the given time.

34
For Day 11, this was the day that we went Kampung Pendas Laut one more time to
install our product at Pn. Mary’s house. After installing the product, we had an interview
section with Pn. Mary about the satisfactory for the product. Before we went back, Pn. Mary
treated my team with a meal and I really appreaciated for her kind and friendly.

For Day 12, this was the last day for MESIC 2018. We showed the video presentation
to show what we had done within 12 days. Before went back to our own hometown, we
double checked the MESIC book and hand in it to facilitator.

35
3.3 Interview Session and Feedback from the Community

During the first visit to Kampung Pendas Laut, we interviewed our targeted family
who is Pn. Mary about the problem that she faces during daily life and working as a
fisherman. From the interview, we are able to list down some problem issues that faced by
Pn. Mary and we could think out the innovative product design to help her to solve the
problem.

The first issue is that we found that Pn. Mary faces problem that spaces to hang the
dry and wet nets. Pn. Mary told us that she usually hangs the dry nets in the house while put
the wet nets on the road outside the house. At the same time, she informed us that the wet
nets must be dried outside the house because the nets are smelly when they are in wet
condition. Since the outside of Pn. Mary’s house lack of the space, so she always faces the
trouble on hanging the net.

The second issue that mentioned by Pn. Mary was the height of the nets. She told us
that normally her kids will help her to clear rubbish that attached on the nets. Thus, her kids
need to sit on the floor in order to clear the rubbish from the nets.

The third issue that Pn. Mary mentioned to us was the weight of the nets. She
informed us that the nets are heavy for her to carry from jetty to her house. This is because
the weight of a dry net is 10kg while the wet net is 25kg. Since the distance from her house to
the jetty is quite far, so it is quite trouble for her to carry the wet net from jetty to her house.

From the feedback of Pn. Mary. She is very satisfied with our product because for her,
this product has 3 uses. First at all, she can hang the nets by the net holder. Secondly, she can
let her children clear the rubbish by hanging the net on the net holder. Lastly, she can use the
trolley to carry the nets from jetty to her house. Basically, this product is very convenient and
flexible for her to use.

36
3.4 Project Outcome

The idea of Trolley-net holder was an idea of multidisciplinary engineering that being
applied from knowledge, theory and the idea from the class to the production of product which
is related to our daily routine. The multifunctional product is convenient and flexible for user
to use. The main purpose of this product is to save space, save energy and improve the
efficiency of working. Thus, this product has its ability to improve the quality life of the
community.

The trolley-net holder was designed by the combination of trolley and nets holder.
Basically, the product was fabricated by galvanized iron pipe. The lower part of the product
was fabricated by (25mm) galvanized iron pipe while the upper pipe of the product was
fabricated by (20mm) galvanized iron pipe. Thus, the 2 poles of the nets holder is adjustable.
The main objective that we created our product like this because the user can lower down the
poles when user want to hang the net while can adjust the poles become higher so the nets can
dry faster. In addition, the trolley part of the product is movable, which user can move the
trolley to outside the house when the user want to dry up the nets.

In order to create this product, we worked at TVET lab for 3 days and used the budget
given to buy the materials. Each team was given RM800 to purchase the materials and we
cannot exceed the budget limit. Luckily, our product is considered as a successful product as
we achieved to create it and achieved the objective. Thus, Trolley-nets holder is the product of
our team which is, Dream Warriors.

CHAPTER 4

REFLECTION

4.1 Introduction

Reflection is the process which people start to think back what knowledge or
experiences that we gained after involving in a activity. Based on Jack Mezirow, reflection is
a defining condition of being human is that we have to understand the meaning of our
experience. Thus, reflection involves our thoughts, ideas, experiences and knowledges ither by
consciously or unconsciously.

Basically, reflection is a process to let us to refresh back what we have learn after
learning something new. Based on the reflection, we also can know the understanding on a new
knowledge. In this condition, refection can help us recognise our own skills and abilities that
we have but often forgotten by ourselves. We can always reflect at any time in order to help us
examine our understanding and feeling on the experience. It also can help us to review our
personality such as ways to manage problems, time management and so on.

4.2 Knowledge and Output from the Programme

As a participant for MESIC 2018, I really learnt a lot of beneficial knowledge from the
activities in this programme. Basically, this programme contains a lot of presentation chance
in order to express our idea on the design. I felt this is very beneficial to me because I seldom
have chance to present and apply my knowledge based on what I have learnt from my course.
Normally, in class I just learnt theory and seldom apply the knowledge by practically. However,
for this programme, it was a chance for me to apply all the related knowledge practically and I
found that sometime what I had learnt from the class not necessary will be the same go to the
reality. Thus, this can let me to prepare myself how to face the reality when the internship and
working life.

For the first 3 days of the programme, basically related with activities that needed
teamwork. For example, explorace is a good activity to let us have chance to recognise and
familiar with our own group’s member. At the same time, we can familiar with the working
style of the team members. Apart from that, during the explorace activity, I found that we must
work as a team and unite in order to complete the given task quickly.

The next section of the programme was seminar. I really felt appreciated because I can
learn knowledge that are different from my course such as finance seminar taught me how to
manage our finance wisely. In addition, TRIZ creativity workshop is the most special thing that
I learnt from this programme. TRIZ workshop taught me need to think out of the box in order
to create innovative product for our future generation. Apart from that, TRIZ workshop also
motivate me must innovate and contribute something to community as I am an engineer. I
should apply the knowledge that I learnt to create innovative product to community so their
life qualities can be improved. This is the time for me to contribute to community by using the
knowledge that I learnt during my study.

For the next section was finding local issues. For this, I leant how to communicate well
with the villagers and at the same time I need to learn how to be more friendly when
approaching villagers. Apart from that, I also learnt how to interview people in a proper way
and observing the local issues.

During the day of purchasing materials, I learnt how to compare the prices of the
materials. This is because I am the treasurer of my team and I have the responsible to make
sure the prices of materials that we purchased did not exceed our budget. At the same time, I
learnt how many units of materials I need to purchase based on the dimension of our product
design. This is because normally seller will sell the galvanized pipe in a long dimension such
as 6 meters, and I need to count how many unit that we need to use.

During the making product process, I experienced how to use tools such as galvanized
iron pipe cutter and conduit pipe threader. Because I am a Chemical engineer, I did not have
any chance to use tools like this, so this is a good chance to me to use the tools and observed
technicians on how using some other machines such as MIG machine which used to weld the
galvanised iron pipe.

The last section of this programme was sending product to our targeted family. I am
very happy and felt that what I had done is valuable when I listened Pn Mary said she is very
satisfied what we did for her.

In conclusion, MESIC 2018 really provided me knowledge and chances to try new thing.
I believed that all the participants also learn many new things from this programme because
this programme only brought positive impact to us. In order to become a successful engineer
in future, I should learn new skills as many as possible before I graduate from UTM because
normally there is no more chance and time for us to learn when we are working. Lastly, I would
like to express my appreciation to Dr. Adnan, Miss Rawdhah, facilitators, technicians from
TVET lab and all my teammates because with their help, I just can go through this programme
smoothly.

4.3 Improvement

Basically, MESIC 2018 went through smoothly for 12 days which is from 20th
January 2018 to 31st January 2018. The progress of each group followed the schedule that
fixed by the organizers. However, I found some problem issues for this programme.

First at all, I found that we should not start to do our product on Saturday and Sunday.
This is because mostly companies will rest on weekend and there is no office hour for Friday
and Saturday in UTM. Thus, I felt that we wasted one day which is Friday before we went for
purchasing the materials. I remembered that we need to go TVET lab and get consultation
from staffs from TVET lab in order to do the decision on purchasing the materials. However,
due to no office hour on Friday, we needed to buy the materials by our own first before
getting consultation from staffs in TVET lab. Thus, we wasted some money in purchasing
extra materials because we left 1 whole complete (25mm) galvanized iron pipe at the end of
the day.

Secondly, I suggested that maybe will have extra one day for making product. This is
because it was quite rushing for my team to complete our product within 3 days. Honestly,
we can succeed to complete our product within 3 days because we get helps from many
technicians in TVET lab. Thus, this means that if we did the product 100 percent by our own,
we are not possible to complete our product within the given time.

CHAPTER 5

CONCLUSION

In my opinion, MESIC 2018 programme is very beneficial to degree student. This is

because I can learn a lot of knowledge from this programme. For example, I can improve my
soft skill such as communication skill, time management skill, practical skill, purchasing
skill, calculation skill and so on. Apart from that, this programme helps student to save the
precious time because it is a programme that contain 2 credit hours if someone join this
programme. This is because I felt quite rushing if co-curriculum subject need to be taken
along with the core subject in a semester. However, this programme provides us a platform to
join the co-curriculum during the semester break so that students can focus on the
programme. At the same time, student can perform well in the programme because we only
need to focus on this programme compare with the normal student, they need to focus the co-
curriculum and at the same time need to study. Lastly, this programme helps me to improve
my self-confidence as well as the ways of thinking.
