EARLY DETECTION AND MANAGEMENT OF MENTAL DISORDERS

As you earlier instructed on choosing a topic and two genres, I decided to write about:

“Early Detection and Management of Mental Disorders”, and the genres I chose are mainly

“Typographic” and “Iconographic” genres. But, it will also portray a little bit of Oral genre too.

I chose this topic because mental disorders are inherent in every facet and segment of the

world population, it is gradually creeping deep into the vast population of the world. It has been

found and clearly stated by the World Health Organization that mental disorders such as depression

and psychosis rank amongst the top 10 leading causes of disability in the world. Mental disorder,

as a leading cause of disability in the world, has created, and still creating obvious and significant

emotional and economic burden for people (especially the young ones), their families, and the

society at large. An early detection to these mental disorders can greatly minimize the potentially

disabling effects. Treatment at the time of detection, can prevent, minimize, and improve long-

term effects and outcomes of the diseases, and particularly, it will be a cost effective and economic

way to treat these diseases.

On a larger scale, a complete cure to mental illnesses has eluded the science and medical

practice. Treatments involving drugs, therapies, counseling, behavioral and cognitive

conditioning, have only been helpful in suppressing the effects of these illnesses, and early

detection and management of these illnesses will play a vital role in these treatments.

Professor, I believe it will be worth investigating further, the roles played by early detection

and management of mental disorders, because it will greatly limit and reduce the long-term effects,

suicidal rates emanating from the disorders, cost of treatment, public menace caused by victims,

etc.

The purpose of this topic will be to alert health institutions and organizations, people

affected by mental illnesses, and the global community at large, to the merits of early detection of

mental illnesses as the best form of suppressing and combating these illnesses, as it will reduce

suicidal rates and other effects to the barest minimal.

I chose the use of typographic and iconographic genre because it would be easier to access

and comprehend. Typographic genre can be gotten on peer reviewed journals online, newspapers,

billboards, and also college campus bulletins. The use of iconographic genre will also aid people

who comprehend better by visual learning as compared to reading. These people will have access

to video clips illustrating “early detection of mental disorders” as a key factor in combating mental

disorders. As a result of using video clips, oral genre will be used also to aid people who

comprehend better by listening.
