Understanding Shakespearean Language

I. Grade 9, 30 Students 2LD/1 ELL/ 3 Gifted

II. Subject/Skill: Reading- Comprehension of Classic literature

III. Objective(s)
Students will be able to understand the evolution of the English language from
classic literature to modern day literature.

IV. Procedures

Direct instruction: Reading to the students excerpts from classic literature


(Hamlet), and reading the translations of the same excerpts using modern
English. Students will write what they believe the proper translation of the
classic words are through using the context clues of the readings.

V. Materials
30 Textbooks with both the classic and modern excerpts, 30 worksheets (2
special ones for the gifted students) 1 Elmo.

VII. Modifications
ELL and LD students will only be required to define the modern version of
the words. Gifted students are going to be given a sheet with sentences is
Shakespearean English and be instructed to translate them into modern
English.

VIII. Assessment

Students will be given a sheet with both the classic and Modern versions of
the words and be asked to match them to the proper definitions, as well as fill
in the blanks of sentences using both the modern and Shakespearean versions
of the words.
