Problem Set 6

Dynamics of Mechanisms
MECH 314
Fall Term, Academic Year: 2009-2010
This problem set is used
again in Fall Term 2010-2011.
it can be submitted until 10-11-18.
Problem 1
Solve problem Problem 15.8 (page 512) from the the book J.J. Uicker, G.R. Pennock and J.E. Shigley:
Theory of Machines and Mechanisms (3rd edition). Determine the external torque which must be
applied to link 2 to drive it at the given angular velocity, also determine all the constraint forces
transmitted between the links in the joints. (Use the principle of superposition for the solution.)

Problem 2
Solve problem Problem 10.6 (page 329) from the the book J.J. Uicker, G.R. Pennock and J.E. Shigley:
Theory of Machines and Mechanisms (3rd edition). Express the solution for ω3 as a function of ω2 ,
and determine the numerical value for the case of ω2 = 0.

Problem 3
Solve problem Problem 10.12 (page 330) from the the book J.J. Uicker, G.R. Pennock and J.E. Shigley:
Theory of Machines and Mechanisms (3rd edition). The number of teeth for gear 7 is N7 = 95.

Problem 4
Solve problem Problem 15.15 (page 513, note that θC = 32◦ and θ2 = 120◦ ) from the the book J.J.
Uicker, G.R. Pennock and J.E. Shigley: Theory of Machines and Mechanisms (3rd edition). First,
perform the complete kinematic analysis for the system (position, velocity and acceleration analyses)
using either the graphical or the analytical techniques (the graphical solution approach may be faster).
In the second part of your solution, determine the external torque which must be applied to link 2 to
drive it at the given angular velocity, also determine all the constraint forces transmitted between the
links in the joints. (Use the principle of superposition for the solution of the force analysis problem.)

Problem 5
Consider the Lévai type-J train shown in Figure 10.10 (p. 316) of the book J.J. Uicker, G.R. Pen-
nock and J.E. Shigley: Theory of Machines and Mechanisms (3rd edition). The planet carrier arm
(link 3) is fixed. Find the speed and direction of rotation of gear 8 if gear 2 is driven by angular
velocity ω2 (express the solution for ω8 as a function of ω2 and the number of the teeth of the gears,
N2 , N4 , N5 , N6 , N7 , N8 ).
