The fact that the flow rate was decreased as WOB ~as·increased is poten-
tially misleading. This is not caused or necessitated by the PDM. Note
from Eq. (S.72b) that bit speed is independent of WOB, standpipe pressure,
and mud weight but is directly proportional to flow rate:

(10) Estimate penetration rates and time required to drill the interval

sure in Case B, the increased turbine mechanical horsepower in Cases
Band C, and the higher bit hydraulic horsepowers in Cases Band C.
Assume that (within limits) RDP is directly proportional to turbine
mechanical horsepower, and that in this range of hydraulics RDP is
fractionally proportional to HSI. The Research Department projects
the following drilling rates:
71
(11) Compute the cost/ft for each case(resu1ts shown in above table).
DISCUSSION
As the bit dulls the mechanical WOB will have to be increased beyond
25,000 lb in order to maintain optimum torque. This will increase the net
bearing load calculated above but note that the bearing load has been
transferred from the off-bottom bearings initially to the on-bottom bear-
ings in the latter stages of the bit run. This is an effective way to
share the load between n two sets of bearings thus prolonging the turbine
life such that it does not become a limiting factor in the bit run.
Theoretically at the point where the load passes from the off-bottom to
on-bottom bearings the bearings are perfectly balanced at zero net load,
i.e. zero wear.
72
67.
(l) Yes, the bit appears to have completely drilled off since the WOB
reading stopped decreasing after 38 min. and still read the same
after 52 min.

(1) Draw a plot standpipe pressure vs. WOB, fit the best curves through
two trends in the data, then locate the inflection point where the
two curves intersect.
(6) From the slackoff plot the bit ap at 22,000 lb indicated WOB is
approx. 2,125 - 1,265 = 860 psi
2
POF = POA • 6P = 4.0 in • 860 psi = 3,440 lb
(8) No, not necessarily. Estimate the true WOB for the radial flow bit.
Assuming that conditions are truly comparable,
2
PDF = POA • 6P = 12 in · 860 psi = 10,320 Ib
True WDB = 22,000 10,320 = 11,680 1b
indicated pumpoff
Locate these two points on a plot of RDP vs. true WOB and see that
the two bits appear to drill equally as well. The radial foow bit may
be expected to also drill 10 ft/hr with 18,600 lb true WOB, but total
indicated WOB of 28,900 lb (7,000 lb of additional drill collar
weight) is required to achieve this.
75
69.
(1) NO, a slackoff test must be run and the data must be plotted in order
to determine the actual mud motor pressure.
(2) Yes, there is a distinct pumpoff point on the plot at the coordinates
x = 9 klb, Y = 1410 psi.
(4) Either the bit has a relatively large pumpoff area and/or the effec-
tive nozzle area is much smaller than the indicated TFA. The pumpoff
plot indicates that the bit ~p is 235 psi. Thus the POA area is
(4,000 lb/235 psi) = 17.0 in 2 and the ap~arent nozzle area is
(385gpm)2 (7.8)/«12031)(235» = 0.64 in. This relatively large POA
for an 8-1/2" bit and the fact that the apparent nozzle area is about
65% of the TFA rather than the usual 80-85% indicates that the bit
has experienced significant but normal dulling (shortening) of the
cutters.

From the tables below it can be seen that a two stabilizer assembly with
the second stabilizer between 60'-75' from the first stabilizer will give
the desired side forces. The 60' second stabilizer will give slightly
less than 2°/100 ft while the 75' second stabilizer will give slightly
more than 3.5°/100 ft. It can also be seen that the WOB for these BHA's
has very little effect and the higher WOB tend to give higher side forces
which should be beneficial in increased penetration rate.
