Last week the Oppidan committee
hosted a lease workshop to educate cur-
rent and prospective Oppidans. Oppidan
warden Gordon Barker outlined the legal
issues surrounding leasing accommoda-
tion, the obligations of landlords and the
bargaining power of tenants.
“There is nothing sacred about a
lease. It can be changed, negotiated and
debated,” said Barker, “very few students
do this; they just accept it, but they don’t
have to”.
Barker stressed the need to read the
fine print very carefully, because once the
lease is signed, students are contractually
obliged. Issues of significant importance
include: who is responsible for the pay-
ment of utilities, levels of acceptable
noise and the question of domestic pets.
In the event of a breach of contract, a
support system for students is available.
The first step is to approach one of the
Oppidan sub-wardens, three of whom
are currently studying law. Students are
also able to contact Barker, and the legal
aid clinic if necessary.

of goats that are born with this condition. There is
nothing special about their appearance, but if you
happen to frighten them, they stiffen up and fall
over involuntarily, remaining helpless for about ten seconds until their muscles relax and they
manage to stand up again. The stiffening is caused when the mutation of a protein stops the
proper passage of the ions that control muscle tensing and relaxing. The result of this is long,
uncontrollable muscle contractions – falling over and being unable to get up. Older goats can
learn to cope with the disorder by spreading their legs wide when they are startled, or leaning
against something to support themselves when their muscles tense up. >> Laura Richter
