Lince again we have an important brass
recording from the analog era remastered onto
CD; presented here are the works euphonium
\ irtuoso Brian Bowman programmed for
his Camegie Hall recital of 1976. Except
lor the Erackcnpohl and Picchi, which were
recorded digitally in 2008, these works were
originally recorded in 1978 and until now

have only been available on vinyl. It should be
noted that many of these works were written
specificaüy for Bowman.
The pieces available here are all staples
of the euphonium literature and are, given
Bowman s connection with the contemporary
pieces, definitive recordings. The "highlight"
is Adler's euphonium and marimba duet, with
spectacular performances by both Bowman
and Stout. It is a challenging work for the
listener and one of the most rhythmically
difficult pieces in the literature, yet both

performers carry it off wiih ease. The last
mo\'ement is stunning, with Bowman's
fanfares Oying off the page and excellent
ensemble collahoration between the two
musicians.
Equally stunning is the performance of
ihe Italian composer Ermano Picchi's Fantasie.
a showpiece that trombone/euphonium
\'inuoso Simone Mantia popularized in the
early twentieth centur)'. Bowman plays with
vigor and panache, with tasteful rubato and
pyrotechnics in the final variations.
Capuzzi's work is a transcription taken
from his string bass concerto and dates
from the early Romantic era. Trombonists
will certainly recognize the composers
Erackenpohl, Boda and Ross, and the
euphonium works here are very similar to
the trombone compositions. Frackenpohl
knows how to write for brass, and the
work shows his love of ragtime and tuneful
melodies. Ross's piece is more technically
challenging and shows the euphonium's lyric
side in the slow movement. Boda used a taped
accompaniment, quite popular in the 197O's
and unioriunately a bit out of favor today; it is
an excellent if somewhat obscure work now.

to Bowman's famous tone, but is recorded a
bit on the close side wilh some valve noise
present ai times; in the Adier the marimba
is quite a bit forward of the euphonium. No
difference in sound or playing is detectable
between the works recorded in 1978 and
thirty years later, an impressive achievement
musically and technically!
Teachers are often asked to recommend
"the best" CD to give to young players. For
the euphonium, this is it.

The name of this ensemble, while perhaps

eliciting a chuckle, is rather misleading—the
ensemhie plays with great musicality

Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development
throughout this disc. The group performs
music by some very familiar brass composers
such as Leslie Bassett, Fisher TuU, Phil
Snedecor, and Eric Ewazen (whose Myths
and Legends is the title composition of the
recording), while making a wonder foul
argument for the music of more esoteric
high-brow composers such as Charles
Wuorinen, John La Montaine, and Philip
Schroeder. The soundstage of this recording
is rich and pleasant as is the individual and
ensemble tone. If you are looking to find
an ensemble to get excited about as well as
hear some great repertoire available to the
trombone quarlel you will want lo own this
impressive recording.
