Ash in Molasses
Introduction
The residue left after burning of molasses is known as Ash, Itis determined by direct incineration and it
composed generally of inorganic substances.
Apparatus
Analytical balance
Crucible or platinum dishes, 50 and 100 mt
Electric muffle Furnace
‘Steam bath
Hot plate
Graduated cylinder
Dessicator
Reagents
Sulfuric acid, 10%
Paraffin or white mineral oil
Procedure
inum dish or crucible in an electric muffle furnace or over a Bunsen burner.
Heat a clean platit
Transfer the dish to dessicator and allow to cool for % to 1 hour.
Weigh the dish on an analytical balance and record the weight.
Transfer a portion of the sample equivalent to 5-10 g to the dish and weigh.

covered with a thin sheet 1.5mm of asbestos. Do not allow to fuse.
8. Cool, add 2-3 ml 10% sulfuric acid.
9. Evaporate on a steam bath, dry on a hot plate and again ignite at 550°C for two hours.
10. Transfer the dish to a dessicator and cool for % to 1 hour.
11. Weigh the dish and record the weight.
