I’m glad that Christ is the Head of this church.
My grandparents were not wealthy. They did not buy
chickens at the grocery store all nicely packaged in
plastic. One day my grandfather asked me to help him
catch one. For a seven year old that was fun. Then it
got gross. He removed the head. That is when it moved
from gross to scary. I learned that a chicken with its
head removed does not quietly perish. It jumps and runs
around for about a minute. Now it has become creepy.
A church that forgets Christ is the head or when it tries
to replace Christ with a pastor, deacon, or member, will
run around and behave in ways it should not. Thanks for
always seeking God’s will first by listening to the Holy
Spirit daily.
We can accumulate a lot of stuff. I read where the
average freshman at Miami University takes eighteen
appliances or plug-ins to campus. We have had two
church yard sales a year for ten years. Each time I ask
myself “Where does all this stuff come from?” God has
blessed us, but all this stuff has a tendency to distract us
from our Lord. We have a duty to be generous with what
God has allowed us to own. Miserable contains the word
miser. Be a giver far more than a taker. We are to be
spiritual contributors far more than spiritual consumers.
This was one of the finest graduating classes I have
ever seen. They have grown physically, emotionally,
academically and spiritually. I’m glad we have discipled
them as followers of Christ. If a nation, church, or family
educates children without teaching them values all we
create is clever devils. I believe God is going to use this
2018 class to make a difference in lives of many.
My age inclines me to enjoy the older hymns. But
I can’t see myself never singing anything new. It is a
dilemma for me. Old or new? Traditional or modern?
My solution? I attend both of our Sunday services. (I
know that I’m preaching in them) but I am glad to be at
a church that can provide both opportunities to worship
God.
Finally I want to thank you for being devoted
followers of Christ. There are other churches similar to
you, but none better than you. It is a joy to serve Jesus
alongside one another

STUDENT MINISTRY

HELPING HANDS MINISTRY - Our students offer
services to anyone needing certain tasks performed
around their home. This ministry is a fundraiser toward
the students’ mission trip costs. Call the church office and
speak to Karen Bush to request a service project.
MISSIONS 3 on 3 BASKETBALL - Saturday, June 2,
is our third annual tournament for missions. This year’s
event takes place at AUM’s Athletics Complex (indoors).
You may register online or in the church office. $60 per
team if registered by May 23 (includes T-Shirt).
1J2 Ministry - This Summer will bring changes to our
format for 1J2. In addition to our Hyde Park location, we
will partner with the Montgomery Baptist Association
and simultaneously serve a second location at Highland
Gardens Baptist Church ministering to the Mixteco
community in that area. 1J2 will occur June 4-8 and again
July 30 - August 3.
SUMMER MISSION TRIP - NASHVILLE -Dates for the
trip are June 25-30. The registration deadline has passed.
Call and speak to Karen to find out your remaining
balance information. We will have a FUGE Info meeting
Sunday, June 3 immediately following the 10:30 service.
SUPER SUMMER ALABAMA - The dates for SSAL
are July 9-13. The early registration deadline has lapsed,
but you may still register to attend. The total cost per
participant is $200 for new registrants. Speak to Cleve or
Karen for details.

Miniature Horse Farm, and a stop at the Amish Craft Farm

STUDENT CHOIR
We are excited about STUDENT CHOIR TOUR, June 18-
21 and the BOSTON BUTT sale is going well.
DEPOSITS 1 & 2 are already due, so get them in as
soon as possible. Fund raiser MONEY is due May 16th,
but go ahead and turn in what you have so that we can
begin preparing… On May 23rd, 24th & 25th we’ll need
volunteers to help with wrapping, pickup & delivery.
We still have several spots to fill for the Tour, so get signed
up and let us know if you’re interested. If you have any
questions call Lance or Gayla at 277-6300.
DAVID PHELPS - May 17th, at 7 PM
David Phelps, known for singing tenor with the GAITHER
Vocal Band for 20 years and for his HIGH TENOR notes
in songs such as NO MORE NIGHT, END OF THE
BEGINNING, and UNTIL THEN, will lift up more than
notes… with live music and full production, he’ll lift up
the name of Jesus - through his Journey of Faith through
Hymns. For tickets, you can go by the church or go online at
phelpstickets.com. Group rates are available.
MISCELLANEOUS
Needed for VBS
We are in need of these items for VBS. Please leave items
in the ministry baskets around the church:
• Tall potato chip containers (Pringles, etc)
• 10 ¾ oz soup or vegetable cans, empty and cleaned out
• Odds and ends – buttons, pompoms, nuts, bolts, ribbon,
& jewels
Disability Ministry
Interpreter services are being offered for the 10:30 AM
service and Wednesday night prayer service.

Deacon Retreat 2018
Alabama Baptist Deacons Retreat for 2018 is being held
at Shocco Springs during a two-day event. The 2018
Program starts at 2 PM on August 10, 2018 and will be
completed at 4 PM on Saturday, August 11, 2018. Deacons
and laymen are encouraged to attend as part of your
spiritual growth. Tremendous speakers are lined up for
this retreat, and hope you will make a commitment and
make it a priority in your life. To make a reservation or
for more information, contact Dick Byers at 279-8335.
