ELECTRA GARRIGÓ BY VIRGILIO PIÑERA: A COMPARATIVE APPROACH TO
THE INTERTEXTUALITY RELATIONS
Abstract
The present research evinces the intertextuality relations which Electra Garrigó
holds in the greek tragedy. Through a comparative approach —it is used Claudio
Guillén’s (2005), Ana Trocchi’s (2002), Manfred Schmeling’s proposals (1984) —it
points out that there were used thematic and formal elements in the updating of the
story’s heroine. Given that the story is developed in a different context that the one
of the original story, it is stressed the value of the text’s modernity and the cuban
cultural aspects. The written brings face to face the Esquilo’s Orestiada and two
untitled Works Electra, the one from Sofocles and the Euripides one, with the
piñeriano written.
The intertextuality, as of Gerard Genette’s concepts (1989), is the base of the study.
This theory’s concepts points in a specific way to the stablished nexus between the
cuban written and its greek correlate. In such a way that the hipotexts or generator
texts are the Esquilo’s Orestiada, the Euripides’ Electra, and the Sofocles one; while
the hypertext is Electra Garrigó. How it is done a direct link with the greek tragedy,
the architext and paratext notions are used, since the first one it’s related to the
modes of enunciation and literary genres; while the second one refers to the whole
structure which surrounds a work: title, subtitle, inter-title, cover, among others.
The first chapter is about a Electra Garrigó’s historiological approach, it places the
work in its literary historical context; conterpousing it to the previous trends and
compare them with the main contemporary authors: Carlos Felipe and Rolando
Ferrer; mainly it is analyzed the relevance of regarding it as a modern theater text
(cuban category) and its link with modernism (supranational category).
The third chapter highlights the Electra Garrigó’s intertextuality relations from the
formal elements (paratext and architext) then at hypertextuality level, of the story.
Moment when it is recognized Piñera’s originality work by contrasting against the
helena’s versions.
