And let’s be honest, it’s not exactly
the most glamorous car, is it? Back
in January of last year, we ran a story
on the upcoming replacement and
in it there was a telling quote from a
factory insider on how the C-class is
perceived by Mercedes. “We want to
make it no longer a car driven by your
grandad,” they told us. Harsh, but fair.
As with the Mini and Qashqai, we
know what’s in store for the upcoming
C-class. A stylish exterior for starters,
and, just for good measure, a truly
exquisite interior that would not look
out of place in an S-class.
On the dynamic front, a multitude
of chassis set-up choices will be
offered in order to tackle complaints
about the ride, including a segment-
first air suspension option.
So if I’ve got this right the new
C-class will be a car for grandad and

grandson alike to enjoy, and one
that Mercedes hopes – and expects –
will finally give a bloody nose to the

Mini
For me, the Mini exudes ‘Britishness’,
OVER A 3-SERIES
even without the in-yer-face Union

revived brand has effortlessly woven
itself back into the nation’s psyche by
dint of producing thoroughly decent
cars within these shores.
Since apearing in 2006, this
second-generation Mini has had a
seismic impact and provided a launch
pad for enormous brand expansion.
Some of the variants evoked reactions
not dissimilar to those prompted by
another British institution, Marmite,
but it’s hard to argue with the sales.
The Cooper model here perfectly
encapsulates the magic of the brand.
Underneath the glitz and baubles,
there are peppy dynamics to enjoy,
although at times, perhaps, the
Cooper is a bit too full-on. As we point
our convoy in the direction of the
West Country, I feel like relaxing into
a steady stroll, but the Mini wants to
continue playing. It’s like an excited
terrier, all perky engine, slightly firm
ride and ultra-responsive steering.
By the time we reach our digs at
spectacular Sennen Cove, I’m longing
for the benevolence of the Mondeo
I’ve just chased down the A30.
Other aspects of the Mk2 Mini are
as infuriating as a truculent teenager.
Where the hell are the buttons to open
the windows? And who in their right
mind refers to the centre console’s
analogue speedo?
But it’s hard to stay mad at the Mini
for long. Time and again its joie de
vivre wins you over, forcing a broad
smile onto your face whenever you
find the right road, which today is a
short but rewarding unmarked route
across the moors.
In 2006 our road test suggested
the Mini Mk2 had grown-up, but
we worried that it might have been
at the cost of some character. But on

match German-built rivals, but that
