Artifact #3: Problem Solving Reflection
Pre-calculus is one of the more difficult math classes I’ve have taken in a while. When I
was younger, math seemed like my calling. I was able to finish all of my work faster than my
other classmates and sometimes even the teachers asked me if I was able to help the other kids. I
thought it was just something natural that I didn’t have to work at, and well, I was wrong, very
wrong. As I got older, the math got harder and it became less natural. Instead of being the one
who understands the lesson quickly, I was becoming the last one to understand the lessons. Of
course there is nothing wrong with that, but I felt that I was no longer good at math.
In Algebra 2, I started to gain the same momentum I had when I was in elementary; the
math felt easy and I broke no sweat. I knew Pre-calculus was not going to be easy and I would
have to work hard. In this case I was right. In this worksheet, Mrs. Harris had given the class a
lesson on operations on functions right before passing out the worksheet. With this section, you
have to be able to find what the f(x) and x are. Not only that, but you have to be able to explain
in context what the variables mean according to the word problem.
Although I might not need this skill on a daily bases, this newfound skill will help me
with my college math. Since I am planning to major in Psychology, I will need to take high level
math and understand it. Maybe I might even become a math teacher, then I will need every math
skill I have acquired and more.
