The Key Benefits of employing the SSCS Frond Scour Protection

Systems are as follows:

They provide a permanent, maintenance free engineering solution to scour.

Other methods such as rock dumping and/or the deployment of sand/gravel bags alone and
concrete only mattresses merely increases the profile of the structure, pipeline or cable causing
edge scour which results in settlement and costly maintenance.

It has been found that rock has sunk and continued over time to sink down to the first
impermeable layer in the seabed, that sand and grout bags alone have been washed away and
that concrete only mattresses create edge scour and have been both washed away and left
suspended on or at the installation they were intended to protect.

They stop scour immediately upon installation.

Once activated the SSCS Frond Systems create viscous drag and so immediately reduce
current velocity and related turbulence in the location to be protected thereby eliminating both
the conditions which create scour and the mass transportation of sediment.

They provide dropped object and impact protection.

Impact loads are dissipated throughout the progressively reinforced energy absorbing sediment
sandbank which compacted by tidal flow during its formation is more dense than the
surrounding seabed.

They can be installed with relative ease and speed.

The installation time for each Frond Mat and Fronded Concrete Mattress is approx: 20 to 25
minutes from deployment at the surface to completion of installation on the seabed.

The Frond Systems have been installed by all major diving installation contractors. Therefore
diver installation experience and competence is well established.

They have low installed costs.

Installation of the SSCS Frond Mats requires a shallow water air diving team while the Fronded
Concrete Mattresses can be installed either with diver assistance or, where subsea visibility is
adequate, with the use of a competent work class ROV. The costs of installation do not
normally exceed those associated with other methods.

They are environmentally accepted.

The sediment sandbank contours flow and blend into the seabed in a hydro-dynamically
acceptable shape and create a Natural Habitat for Marine Life.

The Frond Protection Systems can be supplied in standard sizes or can be specially
designed to accommodate particular geometrical layouts and dimensions and facilitate
access if restrictions should arise.

Environmental Performance of Seabed Scour Control Frond Mats

1. Description of the Scour Control Frond Mats

1.1 Artificial Seaweed ~ the Basis for development of Scour Control Frond Mats

The hydrodynamic possibilities of using Buoyant Fronds to arrest and control scour were
appreciated some years ago.

Seabed Scour Control Systems Ltd (SSCS) was established in the U.K. in the early 1980s
and using "Artificial Seaweed" trials data published by Dupont, ICI's Linear Composites
Limited and by Royal Dutch Shell Chemicals began extensive research and full scale
development and installation trials in the North Sea in conjunction with Shell (UK). This
culminated in field trials successes and in 1984 SSCS commenced full production.

SSCS has created a method of harnessing nature to produce an economic, permanent and
environmentally acceptable solution to scour prevention.

1.2 Scour Control Frond Mats - Description

SSCS Scour Control Frond Mats comprise lines of Buoyant Polypropylene Fronds which form
a viscous drag barrier.

The Buoyant Fronds are made of UV stabilised Polypropylene and are Chemically Resistant.
The Specific Gravity is between 0.905 and 0.915. The average Tensile Strength per strip is
931N. They are attached to the Mat in successive continuous rows to provide an unbroken
overlap of fronds. All fronds are fully fibrillated in film profile. The base of the frond lines are
taped and machine sewn in doubled 6tonne and 1.4tonne MBS webbing members in
continuous discrete rows. Buoyant Frond lines are either “Standard” 1.25m high or “Short
Fronds” 0.625m high.

The SSCS Frond Mats are supplied complete with Polyester Powder Coated Mild Steel
Anchors.

1.3. Long Term Scour Protection and Formation of Sediment Banks.

The SSCS Frond Mats reduce Current Velocity and related Turbulence in the location being
protected eliminating the conditions which create scour immediately on installation. The
reduction in current velocity stabilizes the seabed local to the area being protected and prevents
scour from occurring or reoccurring. Sediments already being carried by the current fall out of
suspension and into the fronded area. Instant Scour Prevention is combined with the build up

of a long term fibre reinforced, consolidated and compacted natural Sediment Bank over the
whole of the fronded area which provides additional Stability and eliminates edge scour.

2. Environmental Impact of the SSCS Frond Mats

2.1 Polypropylene Fronds

The Fronds are made of Polypropylene which is a chemically inert material and is regarded as
being biologically inert. There is no release of any noxious fumes from Polypropylene at ambient
temperatures.

Polypropylene is not considered to be a skin irritant for humans nor for marine life.

The frond materials tested by Shell Chemicals were judged to be “Satisfactory”; Shell define this
as “…… little or no noticeable effect in terms of surface attack, physical deterioration, and in
particular of weight gain by the frond material …… in the presence of designated chemicals”.

2.2 Independent Review of Effects of SSCS Frond Mats

In 1996 an Independent Review was carried out by Krystian W. Pilarczyk of the Hydraulic
Engineering Division of Rijkswaterstaat in Delft and Ryszard B. Zeidler of the Institute of Hydro-
Engineering of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The section below is an authorised extract from
their published report:

“ Artificial Seagrass (Seabed Scour Control Systems Limited)

The past experience with artificial seaweed indicates that the most promising application for this
product is the prevention of localized scour at offshore structures (platforms, pipelines etc.).
The product which actually successfully operates in the market for offshore applications has the form of
an underwater artificial seagrass field/mats (developed in 1980s), and is known as Seabed Scour Control
Systems (SSCS 1995). Based on the artificial seaweed concept of ‘arrested sedimentation’, SSCS system
(mat) suffers none of the drawbacks of similar previous systems. It has superb positional stability, it is not
prone to phytoplankton colonisation, it requires no special tools or skills for installation and it actually
serves to enhance its own effectiveness and that of other conventional sea defence forms. The functioning
principles are straight-forward; buoyant fronds floating upright from the seabed act to reduce seabed and
near-seabed current velocities, encouraging the deposition of transported (eroded) seabed material.

In conjunction with this action, at relatively shallow water the fronds also interfere with wave-induced
orbital forces, effectively causing waves to break early and thus reducing the impact on threatened
shorelines, breakwaters, etc.

This technique employs chemically inert materials to create a flexible barrier to retard the flow of water.
The SSCS scour control mats are retained on the seabed by anchors hydraulically driven to a depth of 1
m. The system has been designed and tested for stability in current velocities in excess 10 knots (> 0.5
m/s). The flexible fronds (mat) can also be incorporated into flexible concrete block mats to provide
added effectiveness in stability and in wave dissipation. The main applications are in protecting fixed
offshore platforms, mobile rigs and pipelines from the effects of scour.

Environmentally acceptable - the sandbank contours follow and blend into the river or seabed, and does
not affect marine life or vegetable growth or fishing.”

Engineering Consultancy and Design Services

These services are provided by SSCS both in connection with the rectification
of scour at existing facilities and also for scour protection of new installations.

Regarding existing facilities:

- We assess the impact of any scour detected during annual and ad hoc
maintenance / inspection surveys.

- We advise on the necessity for remedial works and the likely extent
and impact of further scour if remedial works are not carried out.

- We propose methods for achieving the rectification of existing scour

and for eliminating further scour and we design site specific scour
protection layouts.

For new installations:

- We determine in advance of installation a site’s susceptibility to scour

by analysing data such as that listed on the enclosed Information Data
Sheet 9702 (Information required by SSCS to execute a Site Assessment Study &
any Scour Control Design & Project Layout).

- We recommend effective methods for achieving any necessary scour

protection and provide protection system specifications, installation
procedures and layout drawings.

If as we suggest our engineering and design services are employed at an

early stage of a development the results of our analysis regarding the impact
of scour at an offshore site can be incorporated into the facilities design during
that phase of the works.

Indeed these services have been used as early as during the site selection
process in areas known to be affected by scour to establish the least affected
location at which to position subsea facilities and to define their most
favourable orientation.

Also our analysis of site data is supported by our considerable experience and
knowledge of this aspect of offshore developments and our application of
scour protection systems over twenty years in connection with numerous
projects world-wide.

SSCS has been approved to ISO 9001:2000 for Design & Manufacture by
Lloyds Register Quality Assurance.

INFORMATION REQUIRED BY SSCS to EXECUTE A SITE ASSESSMENT STUDY

& PREPARE ANY SCOUR CONTROL DESIGN & PROJECT LAYOUT
If it is required we are pleased to carry out a study to prepare a full technical response to an enquiry at
competitive rates but we need as much guidance as is possible on the queries listed below for each specific
site:

(1). Storm Waves: (A) 10 year and Annual storm wave height, crest to trough (hc) at site of the
structure, wellhead or pipeline/outfall, or your best estimate; (B) 50 year storm wave height, or best
estimate; and (C) True Directions of storm waves.

(2). Tidal Flow: True Directions and Strengths of max. surface tidal flow at Springs and of any currents
at the site - also if possible at 1m above seabed.

(3). Drawings: (A) If relevant the Plan Drawing layout showing orientation and spacing of any
monopile, wellhead, steel structure, footings, bridge piers or jetty and size and weightcoating of any
pipeline; (B) if there are horizontal members or structures close to the seabed an Elevation
Drawing that shows these (and their vertical positions - where applicable). Seabed slope is also
important (excerpts from Charts are also welcome).

(4). Seabed: Composition at the site: if possible by layer depth to cover at least the top 10m of depth
below the seabed surface. Obviously we much prefer particulate sizes, mix and soil description but
ANY information is better than none.

(5). Depths: Depth of water (LAT) at the site, or depths along the length of the structure / pipeline route.

(6). Existing Scour: Position, length, width and depth below surrounding seabed (or original seabed
level) of any existing scour pits on site. In the case of pipelines the depth of the scour pits below the
top of the pipeline is also essential.

From the above we need to be able to deduce :

(A) the approximate principal inclination of storm waves to a structure, pipeline, outfall, wellhead structure or
to coastline; (B) direction of all tidal and current flow relative to site; (C) whether the spacing or shape of
the any structure / footings is such that it / they themselves cause hydrodynamic interaction which must then
be taken into account; (D) susceptibility of the seabed to scour and size of any scour pits in existence; (E)
hold down / edge stability requirements; (F) estimate sinkage probability and rate; and (G) determine
optimum product type, general layout requirements and thus estimated quantities.
