 Regular verbs – form by adding –e or –ed

to the infinitive: walk+e+d=walked

answer+e+d=answered
We pronounce:
“-ed” as T for the voiceless sound ( last sound of the verb in the
infinitive); asked, cooked, danced, helped.
“-ed” as D for the voiced sound; answered, arrived, cleaned,
died, rained.
“-ed” as ID for the verbs ended in T or D; arrested,
counted, decided, flooded. But:
try-i+e+d=tried
stay+e+d=stayed
stop+p+e+d=stopped
 Irregular verbs - (almost 400) have three
different forms (a base form, a past simple and a past
participle form)
Be-was/were-been
Bite-bit-bitten
Blow-blew-blown

 Auxiliary verbs - “be”, “have”,” do” are

used together with a main verb to give grammatical
information and therefore add extra meaning to a sentence.
They are used to form the passive voice, the present simple,
continuous, perfect tenses.
Ex: The eggs are delivered fresh from the farm.
Do you like pop music?
She is cooking now.
Where have you been?
 Modal verbs –can/could, must, may/might
shall/should, will/would
 do not take "-s" in the third person:
He can speak Chinese.
She should be here by 9:00.

 we use "not" to make modal verbs negative, even in

Simple Present and Simple Past.
He should not be late.
They might not come to the party.

 many modal verbs cannot be used in the past tenses or

the future tenses.
He will can go with us. Not Correct
She musted study very hard. Not Correct
