WROCŁAW – THE FLOWER OF EUROPE

The city of Wrocław boasts fascinating architecture, many rivers and bridges, and a lively metropolitan cultural scene.
It is a city with a past, having seen much violence and devastation, and it was almost completely destroyed during the
Second World War. However, it has been restored and now is one of the highlights of Poland, and the entire central
European region.

Wrocław in its essence is like a bridge, linking generations of different cultures and histories – connecting their efforts
into one unity, and it does so without losing the fascinating diversity. The overall atmosphere of Wrocław is that of a
modern metropolis with historic roots, rich in cultural and academic life.

What particularly makes Wrocław special is its young population, which consists of over 135 000 students amongst its
640 000 permanent inhabitants. Students play a very active role in the cultural life of the city and they frequently
volunteer in the events and initiatives organized in the city (for example, the Expo bid, the European Summit of
Regions and Cities, International Business Forum – Futurallia).

GETTING AROUND

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Wrocław Trams. Source:

http://www.psmkms.krakow.pl/tramwaje/polska/wroclaw.htm

In Wrocław, there are no separate tickets for trams and buses. However, there are two kinds of tickets and they differ
in the price. For the first type, a single adult ticket costs 2.40 PLN for a single ride and allows you to use both buses
AND trams. The second type of ticket, which costs 2.80 PLN, is used if you are travelling at night (buses only) or using a
special bus (they have letters instead of numbers and are faster).

If you plan to ride the public transport more often, it’s best to buy a daily travel card. They cost only 10 PLN and allows
you unlimited travel by all means of public transport in Wroclaw. Keep in mind they are valid only until 12 o'clock at
night. They can be purchased at a ticket machine or from local newsagents.

FROM AIRPORT TO CITY CENTER

At the airport, bus 406 operates from the terminal building to central Wrocław between 5am and 11pm. There is also
a night bus 249. The night bus will take approximately one hour to get to the city center (it will have a short break in
the Jarnołtów district). If you are not sure how to get to your final destination in Wroclaw by public transport, it might
be useful to use the journey planner - http://wroclaw.jakdojade.pl/?locale=en.

There are two cab stops at the airport. First just in front of the terminal building, with the cabs from a corporation
having a contract with terminal authorities. They offer higher quality at a higher price. Second at a distance about 100
meters from the exit of the terminal along the road to the town (on the left side). This stop is available for all cabs. The
prices should be listed on the car, they differ slightly between corporations. The price for reaching the city center
should be about 30PLN during the day.

THE PLACES YOU HAVE TO SEE

THE OLD TOWN AND CITY CENTRE AREA (STARE MIASTO) –

while in Wroclaw, it is highly

recommended to see the Market Square
with its brilliantly painted buildings and
the eye-catching Gothic Town Hall. The
Market Square dates back to the 13th
century. The other tourist attraction not
to be missed is the impressive complex of
religious architecture on Cathedral Island.

BOTANIC GARDEN

(ul. Henryka Sienkiewicza 23, tel: +48 71 322 59

house in Poland. If you have a soul of an artist, you will be mesmerised by the reverie of colors and scents there.

HALA STULECIA (THE CENTENNIAL HALL)

is one of the thirteen historical monuments of Poland registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This
monumental 20th century reinforced concrete structure designed by Max Berg, major architect of the city, has been
on the UNESCO List since July 13th, 2006. With its enormous central space and the dome (23 m high), the Centennial
Hall is a landmark in the history of architecture.

PANORAMA RACLAWICKA (PANORAMA OF THE BATTLE OF RACLAWICE)

(ul. Purkyniego 11, Web: www.panoramaraclawicka.pl) is the 114 meters long painting (for people using imperial

measurement system it is exactly that…very long) and depicts the famous Battle of Raclawice where Kosciuszko led
Poles in an uprising against Russian army. The battle scene is captured in this spectacular painting. It is really a
stunning piece of artwork, the likes of which cannot be found anywhere else in Europe (or maybe even in the world).

and Wieniawski, etc. On the first floor there is the Aula Leopoldina (Leopoldina Hall) constituting the
most representative university hall. Its Baroque interior comprises illusionist frescoes made by J. Ch. Handke, stucco
works by I.A. Provisore and impressive sculptures by F.J. Mangoldt. You can also climb the stairs and visit the
Mathematicians' Tower to enjoy a panoramic view of the city.

This quiet patter doesn’t belong to rats nor to pigeons. These are dwarfs
– the tiniest residents of Wrocław. Human realm crosses with dwarf

harmony since ages. You can find them on the streets of Wrocław. The

CAPITOL MUSICAL THEATRE

The origins of the theatre go back to 1945 when operetta artists coming from the pre-war territories formed an
artistic group and started performing in then-existing Popular Theatre. Fifty years later the Theatre was established
and specialized in the classical operetta repertoire. Over the years its name changed from the Musical Theatre to the
Wroclaw Operetta. Finally, in 1991 the City Council of Wroclaw passed a resolution changing its name to the CAPITOL
Musical Theatre in honour of the pre-war Capitol cinema-theatre which was situated here. For the current repertoire
