HOSPITAL VISITING ARRANGEMENTS During Pandemics and outbreaks of viruses/infections in the community,
The staff of the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital wish to ensure the hospital may have to impose visiting restrictions at short notice. Notices to
that every patient’s stay with us is as comfortable as possible. The hospital this effect will be placed in the Hospital Foyer and on the Hospital’s website

delighted to advise patients, staff and visitors that as a result of this survey a
revised visiting policy is now in place. Please ensure that family and friends are aware of visiting times

We hope this guide will give you the general information you need about the hospital, as well as covering many
areas before and after childbirth, which may be of interest to you and your family. If you are unclear about
anything, or you would like more information, please do not hesitate to ask any member of our staff. You can also

We are dedicated to the continued improvement in the services we offer to women and infants. We wish a safe
and healthy pregnancy, birth and postnatal period for you, your baby and your family.

Since 1826 this hospital has provided care for women, mothers and infants in the Greater Dublin Area and at
regional and national levels. We are proud of our long tradition of excellence and we are committed to provide the
highest standards of multidisciplinary, evidence-based, patient/client-centred care in association with the latest
advances in 21st Century medical therapeutics and technology.
In 2008 the hospital changed its name to the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital in order to reflect the
breadth, depth and complexity of clinical and academic activity on the hospital campus. In addition to providing
patient/client-centred midwifery care, the hospital also provides tertiary maternal-fetal, neonatal, gynaecology and
anaesthetic services at both network and national levels. The hospital hosts the Centre for Midwifery Education
for the Greater Dublin Area, the National Clinical Skills Centre (Women and Infants Health), and the UCD Centre
for Human Reproduction. The TCD Molecular Medicine Research Laboratory, also based on the campus of the
hospital, has an international reputation for excellence in advanced reproductive and cancer research.
The newly-opened Perinatal Ultrasound Department and the infrastructural redevelopment of the Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit has increased our capacity to provide the highest standards of complex care for our highest-
risk mothers and infants.
The increasing number of midwifery-led, community-based antenatal clinics.and the expansion of the Early Transfer
Home Scheme after delivery has greatly facilitated the provision of care to mothers and infants both closer to
home and in the home. In addition to this, the community midwife service based at the hospital commenced a
Domino scheme in July 2011. This scheme provides a new service for low-risk mothers whereby mothers may
book care with a team of midwives who will provide continuity of care during the antenatal period, in labour and
after delivery, with early transfer home at 12 to 24 hours after birth and follow-up in the community.
The opening of the new, state-of-the-art Colposcopy Unit on the campus of the hospital in October 2011
has significantly advanced the provision of women’s health services as part of the National Cervical Screening
Programme.
The hospital is working closely with the HSE on an exciting project to redevelop our Delivery Suite. It is hoped that
this project will be completed in 2013.
The ethos of the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital is one of multidisciplinary teamwork and patient/
client-centred care. We would, once again, like to thank you for choosing our hospital for your care.
If you attend a consultant privately, you will normally be accommodated in a private bed
after your baby is born. Women opting for private care will not be accommodated in a
public bed except in an emergency, until a private bed becomes available. As the number
of mothers under private care delivering on any one day cannot be predicted in advance,
private accommodation cannot be guaranteed on admission. Please note that private beds
are allocated on a first come, first served basis.
For classes and booking details, call (01) 408 5214, or email parenteducation@coombe.ie with your name,
address, telephone number and hospital chart number. We run couples classes and one-day classes for parents
who are booked at the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital.Early booking is advisable.

Chaplaincy Service
The Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital offers all women, babies and their relatives the spiritual support
of their respective faiths and traditions. The Chaplaincy Department is staffed by Roman Catholic staff, and clergy
of other denominations are available on request. To contact the chaplain, telephone (01) 408 5200 and ask for
bleep 175. The Oratory on the fourth floor is open for women and their families who wish to visit during visiting
hours and attend services.
Going Home
Early Transfer Scheme
Many mothers wonder how soon can they go home or how long can they stay in hospital. We try to ensure that
all mothers are enabled to go home as soon as possible after the birth of their baby, as long as mother and baby
are fit for discharge. Some mothers and babies have complications which require extended hospital stay and
treatment.
As it can be difficult to relax in a hospital, and hospitals, out of necessity, carry several restrictions, we do
encourage women to plan to go home as soon as they are fit to do so where they can relax in their own beds,
have use of their own toilet facilities and have meals of their choice in their own time surrounded by the family
and friends that they want present. Therefore, we have developed an Early Transfer Home Scheme.
If you booked for public or semi-private care and are interested in availing of this service, and live in one of the
applicable areas (Dublin 8, Dublin 10, Dublin 12, Dublin 20, Dublin 22, Dublin 24, Lucan, Naas – urban, Sallins,
Newbridge, Johnstown and Kill, Co. Kildare), you and your baby must be assessed as suitable by your midwife
and paediatrician respectively. If these conditions are met, you can avail of the option to be transferred home from
12 to 24 hours following the birth of your baby and to have a midwife visit you at home, up to and including day
five, instead of staying in hospital. If you have had a Caesarean section, you can avail of the early transfer home
from 72 hours, if you and your baby are well. For further details, telephone (01) 408 5616. You can leave the
hospital from 12 hours after the birth or, if delivered at night, after 9.00am the next morning. There is no charge
for this community midwife service.
Car Seat
Make sure you have a car seat
for your baby’s travel home.
Please note that we are continuously expanding this service to a greater area each
year but it is wise to check with your midwife in advance to ensure that you live in an
area served by community midwives. For mothers who live in an area where there is no
community midwife service currently available but have health insurance, please check
with your insurance provider as you may be able to avail of payment towards hiring your
own midwife or nurse in certain circumstances.
For all other mothers who do not avail of the early transfer home scheme, the standard
hospital stay is as follows:
• First-time mothers (vaginal birth) where mother and baby are well: 48-hour stay.
• Second-time or subsequent mothers (vaginal births) where mother and baby are well:
24-hour stay.
• All mothers who have had a Caesarean section: 48 to 96-hour stay (three to five days).
All mothers and babies availing of the standard hospital stay will be visited at home by
their public health nurse within a few days of discharge home. Do contact your local
health centre if you need more information on who may visit and when that visit is likely
to take place.
Day of Discharge
Beds and rooms should be vacated by 10.00am on the day of discharge to facilitate
cleaning in advance of the next new mother occupying the bed.
Health Insurers
Women should be aware that they are liable for all costs in respect of their stay in
hospital. The hospital cannot advise women on the likelihood of a health insurer agreeing
to cover extra costs or accommodation. Please make sure you contact your insurer if
you have any queries on your health insurance cover. Please check with your insurance
provider as you may be able to avail of payment towards hiring your own midwife or nurse
in certain circumstances after the birth of your baby if you do not have access to the
hospital community midwife service.
Settlement of Accounts
Hospital accommodation charges and inpatient levies are set by the Department of Health
and Children, and not the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital. However, the
hospital management has a statutory responsibility to recover all costs associated with a
patient’s care. For women with private health insurance, it is important for you to ensure
that your cover will pay for all aspects of care of you and your baby. If there is a shortfall,
you will be required to pay the hospital.
Postnatal Information
Six-Week Postnatal Check-Up
Women who have opted for combined antenatal care are encouraged to attend their GP
for the free two-week visit for their baby and for the free six-week postnatal visit. The
hospital encourages new mothers to see their GP as this is an opportunity to discuss how
they are getting on following the birth, infant feeding, contraception, and any other issues
a woman and her baby may have. It is a good idea to write down questions or concerns in
advance so you can ask your doctor about them.
All women are encouraged to register for Cervical Check, the national cervical screening
service which is free to all woman aged 25 to 60, If you have any questions you can call
Cervical Check on Freephone 1800 45 45 55.
Complaints
If you are not happy about some aspect of our service, please let us – the staff on the ward or in the clinic – know
immediately. We will try and put things right for you on the spot. If we can’t resolve the matter, or you are unhappy with the
outcome, then you should write to the Patient Advocacy Co-ordinator who will look into the matter for you.
Coombe Care
Coombe Care is the name of the voluntary group of dynamic and enthusiastic women who provide their time freely and who
are always in need of donations and help. If you would like to help, please contact the Friends of the Coombe office on (01)
408 5539. Some mothers arrive in hospital without basic provisions. Coombe Care, founded in 1986 by Mrs Geraldine Davy,
provides these mothers with essentials such as night-dresses, babywear, toiletries and, at Christmas time, food vouchers to
help the family. In short, Coombe Care enables these mothers to give birth with dignity.
The paediatric service at the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital is one of
our greatest strengths. The Neonatal Intensive Care unit seeks to acquire the latest
technology and equipment for the care of sick babies, particularly those infants who are
very small and premature.
Making a Donation
Donations can be accepted in the form of cheques, postal orders or bank drafts and should
be made payable to Friends of the Coombe and sent to: Friends of the Coombe, Coombe
Women & Infants University Hospital, Cork Street, Dublin 8. You can also donate online,
please visit www.friendsofthecoombe.ie.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. We do hope that you will be impressed with the
care we can provide for you and your baby. If you have any questions on any matter, ask
your midwife or doctor for more information.
Freedom of Information
We believe in openness and transparency and will endeavour
to make personal information available to the women who
use our services.

Breastfeeding Battles Obesity
According to research, breastfed babies who are
weaned on to solid foods later have a far lower
risk of obesity by age nine.
Research published in the journal of Social
Science and Medicine used data from a
Government-funded study following almost
20,000 children and their families, called
'Growing Up in Ireland'.
The study was carried out by Dr Cathal
McCrory and Prof Richard Layte of the Economic
and Social Research Institute (ESRI) and found
that children who had been breastfed for three
to six months were 38 per cent less likely to
be obese at nine years of age compared to
exclusively formula-fed children, while those
breastfed for six months or more were 51 per
cent less likely to be obese.

Meat, chicken and fish are excellent
sources of iron, while vegetable sources
are beans, peas, pulses, tofu, nuts
and green, leafy vegetables. If you
are vegetarian or vegan, you need to
eat a source of vitamin C (oranges,
orange juice, berries, lemons, limes,
grapefruits, peppers or fresh tomatoes)
with each meal to aid in the absorption
of vegetable-based iron. Ask your
doctor or dietitian if you need an iron
supplement. Tea and coffee contain
substances called tannins that reduce
iron absorption so take these drinks

your meals.
Omega-3 fatty acids are getting a
lot of attention these days. These are
healthy fats that help to build baby’s
brain and nervous system and play
a role in heart health. Oily fish like
salmon, sardines, mackerel and herring
are excellent sources of omega-3.
Aim to eat a portion of oily fish twice
weekly. If you can’t stomach oily fish,
omega-3 can be sourced from seeds,
white fish, linseed, canola (rapeseed)
oil, soy foods, wholegrains and green,
leafy vegetables.
Constipation can trouble most women
in pregnancy due to changes in the
digestive system. Prevent it with high-
fibre cereals, wholegrains and plenty of
fruit and veg. Fluids are crucial to keep

by drinking water throughout the

Cut your risk of food poisoning by
handling your food properly:
❃ Wash hands before and after
preparing food.
❃ Keep separate cutting boards
for raw meat versus cooked
meats, and for meat versus fruit
and vegetables.
❃ Make sure your refrigerator
temperature is less than 5˚C and
your freezer is less than -18˚C.
❃ Store raw meat, chicken and

your refrigerator to prevent
any juices leaking on to
other foods.
❃ Cook all foods through, especially
eggs, chicken, meat and fish.
Reheat any leftovers until piping

WHAT IS OBESE?
There is much misunderstanding surrounding obesity – in trials, many clinically
obese people define themselves as merely overweight or even at a healthy weight.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines an obese person as someone with a
body mass index (BMI) of over 30kg per square metre. According to Prof. Turner,
mothers with a BMI of over 35 need particular attention. “They’re the ones who
are particularly at risk – the risks are not as high among women who have ‘mild’
obesity, with a BMI of between 30 and 35,” he says.

making it easier to digest. The result is less discomfort and fewer tears.
Simply add a few drops of Colief to the milk each time you breast or bottle feed.
