The legacy and long-term effects of the
counterculture are still prominent in today’s
society. The fashion and music of the
counterculture played a huge role in the change
of lifestyles for many American citizens. Long
hair for men, personal style of dressing, and
ragged jeans was more acceptable in society,
and still is today. It gave Americans a chance to
be themselves and live how they wanted to.
The music of the counterculture also had a
great impact of society. Artists of this time
explained their personal feelings through their
lyrics. The music of this generation still
influences many musicians today.

During the 1960s, many young people disagreed
with the government. These people called
themselves hippies. Hippies formed the
counterculture, a culture with values and beliefs
different from those of the mainstream. They
rejected the social norms of American people
during this time.

In order to show their rejection of society, Hippies
created a completely new lifestyle. Their goal was
to make a society that was freer, closer to nature,
and full of love, tolerance, and cooperation. They

With their goals in mind, Hippies began showing
their full rejection. They wore bright colors,
listened to rock music, did many drugs, lived
together in communes, rejected Christianity, and
gave up most or all personal items. By wearing
bright clothes, they were rejecting the stereotype
out of business, increased the use of psychedelic

to expand their minds and discover themselves.

Jack Kerouac
He is the author of the novel On the Road. In order to
get inspiration for the novel, Kerouac and Neal
Cassady took a cross-country road trip. Their trips
were filled with sex, drugs, and jazz. His novel
Jimi Hendrix
Guitarist, singer, songwriter. He was a rock legend in
the 1960s. His most memorable performance was at
Woodstock in 1969. Hendrix played “The Star
Spangled Banner.” After his death in 1970, he left an

Andy Warhol
He was a magazine and ad illustrator during the
1960s. He became a very important artist of the Pop
art movement as well. His art experimented with
different forms and styles which was very different
than mainstream art.
Major Events
Woodstock
August 17, 1969 was the start of a three-day long
festival of peace, love, and rock ’n’ roll. It took place
of a 600-acre farm in Bethel, New York. Many popular
singers from the 60s performed at the festival. The
audience consisted of hippies and members of the
counterculture. 186,000 tickets were sold and no
more than 200,000 were expected to show up. Friday
night, thousands of people were eager to get in. Over
500,000 hippies came to the festival. The promoters
were worried that they could not control the crowds
so they let everyone in for free.
Summer of Love
The Summer of Love, 1967, was a huge gathering of
Hippies. There were more than 100,000 members of
the counterculture who congregated in Haight-
Ashbury, San Francisco. San Francisco was the most
popular location for hippies. The Summer of Love
created a new kind of music, acid rock, put barbers
drugs, turned sex into a lavishness, and gave a
people a new understanding of the American term
“free.”
