 INTRODUCTION
Its is rightly said that agriculture is the BACKBONE OF
INDIAN ECONOMY . It plays the most important role in
the economic development of our country ; because it
provides an employment to about 70 percent of the
working people , thus very large proportion of
population of our country depend on agriculture for
their livelihood . Our agriculture contributes about 29
percent of the gross domestic production . It provides raw
material for number of agro-based industries , eg.cotton
textile , sugar , spices , etc .

FARMERS SUICIDE
 In 2014 , the National Crime Records bureau of
India reported 5,650 farmer suicides . The highest
number of farmer’s suicide rate in India has ranged
between 1.4 and 1.8 per 1,00,000 total population over a
10 year period through 2005 . India is an agrarian
country with around 60% of its people depending
directly or indirectly upon agriculture . Farmer suicide
account for 11.2% of all suicides in India . Activist and
scholars have offered a number of conflicting reasons
for farmers suicides , such as monsoon failure , high
debt burdens , genetically modified crops ,
government policies , public mental health and so
on .

Maharashtra :
Maharashtra farmers commit suicide dharma patil
dhule district had alleged that the government had
paid him only Rs. 4lakh compensation for 5 acres of
farmland which was acquired for thermal power plant.
he had consumed poison at mantralaya when in last 3
month did not yield any result.
PUNJAB:
In Punjab recently a farmer name avatar Singh
committed suicide.Avtar Singh was a landless farmer he
had 3 children & had no means to earn a daily bread &
butter for them, He sold all his land to return a debt, but
still saddled with 4 lakh.
Due to the chronic stress & burden of debt he finally
committed suicide on a day before independence day of
India.
Irony is that after facing such issues are our countries’
people really enjoying freedom.
Uttar Pradesh :
Farmer end life after alleged harassment by
bank staff. Money lender Anuj Bajpai (25)
hanged himself from the ceiling of hiss
room in kanwara village & left a suicide note
addressed to the chief minister.
“ We need to support farmers who feed our country &
the world and that includes making sure that they can
get all the mental health services so that farmers have
access to help.
