After the relentless efforts of Kathleen Brooks to deduce a way to make her employees work

harder and produce more output she had stumbled upon a dead end. Her company, Brooks

Machine Parts was passed down to her when her father passed away previously. Keith, her father

had always taken a different approach when managing his company; one in which Kathy did not

agree with. When Kathy took over there was an immediate change in how the business was run.

Kathy thought that her changes would bring success but it only decreased outputs and a number

of costs had gone up. After hiring a consultant and he reviewed the history Kathy was told to

revert to the humanistic methods her father used. Kathy disagreed and concluded quite

confidently that the solution to their problems was to cut employees pay who failed to increase

their productivity by 10 percent.
