irtual reality could one day
incorporate all the senses,
creating a rich and immer-
sive experience, but existing virtual
reality headsets only simulate things
you can see and hear. But now, a
group of engineers wants to help
people “touch” virtual environments
in a more natural way and they built
a wearable suit to do just that.

Morgan Sinko and Jordan Brooks
of University of Rochester, in New

York, the suit looks something like a
bulletproof vest or light armor. Each
section of the suit has a small motor
in it, not unlike the one that makes
a mobile phone vibrate to signal in-
coming messages. In addition, there
are small accelerometers embedded
in the suit’s arms. The vibrations
provide a sense of touch when a vir-
tual object hits that part of the body,
and the accelerometers help orient
the suit’s limbs in space. When the
suit is connected via a cable to a
computer, it links to a virtual reality
headset, such as the Oculus Rift or
HTC’s Vive. The suit also shares data
with a motion-tracking system, the
current version connects to a Micro-
soft Kinect, but any system will do.
The combination of motion-tracking
and accelerometers means that it
doesn’t matter if your arm is out
of view of the camera because the
program generating the virtual en-
vironment will “know” where your
hand is and can calculate where it is
most likely to be, based on how long
your arm is and what the accelerom-
eter tells the device about how your
hand is moving. With that informa-
tion, a virtual environment can show
a tree branch, for example and tell
the suit to vibrate in the spot where
it would touch if it were hitting your
side or if you were touching it with
your hand. It can also set up virtual
walls that you could feel. This way,
when you are walking around in
your virtual environment, you won’t
accidently bump into a real wall or
trip over your coffee table.
The real issue is when you use con-
trollers to move in a virtual reality
space, it doesn’t correlate to move-
ment. The tracking component lets
you get out of the chair and walk
around. Another issue with existing
VR headsets is that some cause mo-
tion sickness and nausea. Incorpo-
rating the sense of touch could help
with this problem, the researchers
said, because what a person sees in
the virtual environment will match
up better with what they perceive
with respect to their bodies. (This is
one reason people get seasick, the
boat is moving but the horizon isn’t,
and this disconnect makes some
people feel ill). Still, it will be some
time before these VR suits make
their way onto store shelves, the re-
searchers said. Copeland, Sinko and
Brooks founded a company called
Nullspace VR, which has received
some funding from prize money and
via the Y Combinator fellowship, but
the engineers will need additional
money to actually build the devices.
There is some skepticism among
industry-watchers about whether
virtual reality technologies will truly
take off. In the 1990s, it was ‘de
rigueur’ to build virtual reality head-
sets, but none of those systems ever
found widespread use. The problem
was twofold: computing power sim-
ply wasn’t up to the job of recreating
a whole simulated environment and
there wasn’t much a VR headset
could do that was a big improve-
ment for existing video games at
the time. A similar phenomenon
happened with Nintendo’s Wii video
game console, which was introduced
in 2006, and the Kinect, which
launched in 2010. Both systems
received a lot of fanfare and the Wii
initially sold well. But, a decade after
its launch, Wii sales have slowed, in-
creasing only a fraction of a percent
quarter-over-quarter, according to
June-16
figures from Nintendo’s earnings
reports. Microsoft announced in Jan-
uary 2015 that it would retire the
Kinect for Windows. In Kinect’s case,
the problem was a lack of software
that used the system effectively, and
in many instances, people needed
to move furniture around the living
room in order to accommodate the
tracker’s field of view.
To avoid the “gimmick” problem, Co-
peland said Nullspace is making the
VR sets available to developers first,
to make sure that there is content
that could make use of its capabili-
ties. Copeland is confident, though,
that once VR headsets like the Ocu-
lus Rift and Vive are widely avail-
able, the experience will drive users
to buy Nullspace’s VR suits as well.
Already, when users have tested out
the suit, people are so impressed,
they’re like instant converts.

but Microsoft wants its undersea
systems to go without maintenance
for years at a time. They see this as
an opportunity to field long-lived,
resilient data centers that operate
‘lights out’, nobody on site, with
very high reliability for the entire
life of the deployment, possibly as
long as 10 years.
According to Microsoft, these are
the main reasons for experimenting
with underwater data centers:
1. Air conditioning cost is one
of the biggest pain in running
data centers. Traditional data
centers are believed to con-
sume up to 3 percent of the
world’s electricity. So, placing
the data centers in the ocean
eliminated the need for cooling
and will highly cut energy costs
required to cool the heat gener-
ated by the racks upon racks of
servers that process and store
the world’s digital lives.
2. Half of the world’s population
is located within 200 kilome-
ters of the coast, so placing
data centers in the sea would
reduce latency – the time data
takes to travel from its source
to customers, which simply
means faster delivery of data.
3. Reduce the time to build a data
center from 2 Years to 90 Days.
Microsoft believes that if it can
mass produce the steel cap-
sules, the company could build
data centers in just 90 days.
This would make its operations
cheaper and much quicker than
the time needed to set a data
center up on land. Moreover,
the capsules designed by the
company would also adopt
new, innovative rack designs
that do not even need to con-
sider human interaction.
4. Use of Renewable Energy. The
project’s engineers even be-
lieve that in future, underwater
data centers might be able to
power themselves by renew-
able energy, as in this case,
perhaps underwater turbines
or tidal power to generate
electricity.
5. Environment-Friendly. Micro-
soft will also be tackling en-
vironmental concerns related
to underwater data centers.
The company says its current
underwater data center proto-
type emits an “extremely” small
amount of heat energy into the
surrounding waters.
Microsoft’s first prototype, named
Leona Philpot after a character
from Halo, contained only a single
computing rack sealed in pressur-
ized container filled with nitrogen.
More than a hundred different
sensors were used to monitor
conditions inside and outside the
capsule, with Microsoft’s engineers
keeping an eye on conditions like
humidity, pressure, and motion.
The sensors also measured the cap-
sule’s impact on its environment,
although thankfully, the sounds of
the server’s fans were drowned
out by the noise of nearby shrimp,
while the heat it generated only
affected the water a few inches
around the vessel.
Obviously the project is still in
the early stages of development,
but Microsoft states that it’s the
right time to start rethinking data
centers. Not only is demand for
data growing as cloud comput-
ing becomes more popular, but
the slowing of Moore’s Law (the
observation that computing power
doubles roughly every two years),
means that servers are less likely
to become outdated. Microsoft is
already working on its next step,
an underwater system three times
the size of the Leona Philpot, with
the company expecting to start new
trials sometime next year.

Operation ASHA (OpASHA). Started
with TB as its focus, OpASHA today,
in terms of patients treated, is the
biggest NGO in India and 3rd largest
in the world, and provides high
quality treatment also for hemophil-
ia, diabetes and heart care now.
Started with one treatment center in
India in 2006, OpASHA now offers
TB treatment through more than
200 centers in India in 9 different
states. They have also set up a coun-
try office in Cambodia that covers
6 provinces and 15% of its popula-
tion. The model has been replicated
in 5 other countries- Peru, Uganda,
Kenya, Dominican Republic, and Af-
ghanistan. Replication in many other
countries will take place soon.

treatment and surgeries for patients
who came to her, unable to afford
life-saving procedures. An Obs and
Gynae surgeon, Batra worked out of
her house or Delhi’s Batra Hospital
and performed countless life-saving
operations and infant deliveries for
free to disadvantaged patients. Then
the only obstacle for her was fund-
ing the incidentals like antiseptics,
fluids and anesthetics necessary
to carry out these operations. She
called her friends and family to ask
for donations, but her most regular
contributor after 1998 was Sandeep
Ahuja.
In 2006, Batra and Ahuja founded
Operation ASHA and decided to
focus their fledgling organization
to develop a pipeline to pump in
services and products to the most
disadvantaged. They decided to fo-
cus on a single issue till the pipeline
became fully reliable. This issue
was the eradication of tuberculosis
(TB). Their vision attracted people
to join from around the world, and
an advisory and fundraising group
grew in the US to form Operation
ASHA, USA.
Since its inception, Operation ASHA
has engaged in the following areas
of work:
• Delivery of TB treatment and
counselling services to offer
psychosocial support to the
patients and their families.
• Detection, management, aware-
ness building for diabetes and
cardio-vascular disorders.
• Partnering with micro-entrepre-
neurs to set up OpASHA centres,
thereby providing an opportuni-
ty to increase their income.
• Vocational training to TB pa-
tients to support their family
income.
• Active case finding, awareness
generation, detection, treatment
support and management of a
genetic disorder amongst chil-
dren - Haemophilia.
Making a difference
through unique style of
approach
Known for its unique methodology,
Operation ASHA’s work involves
all kinds of innovations, unlike any
other NGO working anywhere in the
world in any area and that’s how
they differentiate themselves from
others. Their service provider is not
a doctor, but a community health
worker hired from the local area
and trained to work on the front-
line, with necessary support from
a doctor. This dramatically reduces
the cost of treatment. They have
non-descript clinics without signs
that mention TB to reduce social
stigma, which makes it safer, partic-
ularly for women, to seek treatment
and have also identified ways to
increase treatment compliance by
using technology, for a disease that
is traditionally difficult to treat. All
of this is achieved at a cost 42 times
lesser than most other NGO.
Benefitting the needy is
their mantra
Operation ASHA’s most important
clients are their beneficiaries whom
they serve - people living at the
bottom of the pyramid in the most
disadvantageous conditions. Their
target area ranges from mountain-
ous terrains, far flung rural and
tribal areas to urban slums and
even conflict ridden zones or Maoist
affected areas.
They have tie ups with the local
governments of the districts/ states
or countries where they work. In
some cases, replication happens
through third parties. They have also
licensed their technology to pharma-
ceutical companies like Baxter for
use in management of diseases other
than TB - like Haemophilia. Recently
they have partnered with Qualcomm
Wireless Reach to move their entire
training module and patient coun-
seling to remote video based skype

ers asked the man to wiggle
different fingers. The team noted
which parts of his brain “lit up”
when the sensors detected neural
electrical activity from each
finger movement. The team also
noted which parts of the brain
were involved in feeling touch.
They gave the man a glove that
vibrated at the tip of each finger.
Again, the researchers identified
the different areas of the brain
that “lit up” when the man felt the
vibrations on his fingers. After
collecting the motor (movement)
and sensory data, the research-
ers programmed the prosthetic
arm, which was developed at the
Johns Hopkins University Applied
Physics Laboratory. Whenever
a certain part of the man’s brain
expressed electrical activity, the
prosthetic would move a corre-
sponding finger.
This turned the electrode sensors
into the ultimate mind-reading
machine. Researchers connected
the electrodes to the prosthesis
and asked the man to think about
moving his fingers one at a time.
Within moments of when the man
moved his real fingers, the fingers
on the prosthetic arm moved, too.
The electrodes used to measure
brain activity in this study gave
us better resolution of a large
region of cortex than anything
we’ve used before and allowed for
more precise spatial mapping in
the brain, this precision is what
allowed us to separate the control
of individual fingers.
First, the mind-controlled arm
was accurate just 76 percent of
the time. But then, researchers
coupled the ring and small fingers
together, which increased the ac-
curacy to 88 percent. The part of

most people move the two fingers
together. It makes sense that cou-
pling these two fingers improved
the accuracy. Moreover, the device
is easy to use and doesn’t require
extensive training.
Yet, the technology is still years
away from clinical use and it will

help many people. There are more
than 100,000 people living in the
United States with amputated
hands or arms, according to the
Amputee Coalition of America,
a Virginia-based nonprofit orga-
nization that represents people
who have experienced limb loss
or amputation. There are already
myriad technologies designed to
help people with missing limbs.
For instance, advances in pros-
thetic limbs and artificial skin are
helping to restore a sense of touch
for people, even if they’ve lost
extremities.

data storage crystal could store data for lifetime

cientists at the University of
Southampton have made a ma-
jor step forward in the devel-
opment of digital data storage that
is capable of surviving for billions of
years. Using nanostructured glass,
scientists from the University’s
Optoelectronics Research Centre
have developed the recording and
retrieval processes of five dimen-
sional (5D) digital data by femtosec-
ond laser writing.
The storage allows unprecedented
properties including 360 TB/disc
data capacity, thermal stability up
to 1,000°C and virtually unlimited
lifetime at room temperature (13.8
billion years at 190°C) opening a
new era of eternal data archiving. As
a very stable and safe form of por-
table memory, the technology could
be highly useful for organisations
with big archives, such as national
archives, museums and libraries,
to preserve their information and

records. The technology was first ex-
perimentally demonstrated in 2013
when a 300 kb digital copy of a text
file was successfully recorded in 5D.
Now, major documents from human
history such as Universal Declara-
tion of Human Rights, Newton’s Op-
ticks, Magna Carta and Kings James
Bible, have been saved as digital
copies that could survive the human
race. A copy of the UDHR encoded
to 5D data storage was recently pre-
sented to UNESCO by the ORC at the
International Year of Light closing
ceremony in Mexico.

Rights recorded into 5D optical data,
the documents were recorded using
ultrafast laser, producing extremely
short and intense pulses of light.
The file is written in three layers
of nanostructured dots separated
by five micrometres (one millionth
of a metre). The self-assembled
nanostructures change the way light
travels through glass, modifying
polarisation of light that can then
be read by combination of optical
microscope and a polariser, similar
to that found in Polaroid sunglasses.
Coined as the ‘Superman memory
crystal’, as the glass memory has
been compared to the “memory
crystals” used in the Superman films,
the data is recorded via self-assem-
bled nanostructures created in fused
quartz. The information encoding
is realised in five dimensions: the
size and orientation in addition to
the three dimensional position of
these nanostructures. Professor
Peter Kazansky is overwhelmed that
they have created the technology to
preserve documents and informa-
tion and store it in space for future
generations. He stated that this tech-
nology can secure the last evidence
of our civilization, all we’ve learnt
will not be forgotten.
The researchers presented their
research at the photonics industry’s
renowned SPIE, The International
Society for Optical Engineering
Conference in San Francisco, USA.
The team is now looking for indus-
try partners to further develop and
commercialize this ground-breaking
new technology. The research-
ers are looking to combine with
industry partners to develop a
higher-powered laser but, ahead of
that, they plan to switch the SLM for
another on the market that should
increase their writing speed from
kilobytes-per-second to mega-
bytes-per-second, and are keeping

next upgrade to 5G was still consid-

er, American mobile giant AT&T has
announced plans to start testing 5G
technology, with a possible limited
commercial rollout before the end
of 2016.

Series Fibre Channel Adapters
recently along with its new FastLinQ
100 GbE Ethernet controllers. Gen
6 Fibre Channel holds the key to
unlocking more performance, and
Fibre Channel continues to be the
premier storage network fabric. The
Gen 6 QLogic models provide up to
2.6 million IOPS and 24 GBps per
second of aggregated throughput.
The performance benefits of pairing
the speedy interface with flash-
based storage solutions would be
immense.
The QLogic 2700 Series adapters
come in single-, dual- and quad-
port versions and reach the stated
24 GBps of throughput with four
aggregated ports. The adapters
are well suited for use in All-Flash
Arrays and high-density virtualized
5G offers the promise of besting the
speeds of today’s fastest wireless
networks by a factor of 10 to 100,
