Request
Goucher
Dance
Orchesis
requests
that
Goucher
College
forms
an
athletic
apparel
contract
with
Under
Armour
for
the
Goucher
Dance
Department
in
order
for
dancers
to
properly
and
professionally
represent
their
institution.
About
Under
Armour
and
Goucher
Athletics
Founded
in
1996
by
former
University
of
Maryland
football
player
Kevin
Plank,
Under
Armour
is
the
originator
of
performance
apparel
-‐
gear
engineered
to
keep
athletes
cool,
dry
and
light
throughout
the
course
of
a
game,
practice
or
workout.
The
technology
behind
Under
Armour's
diverse
product
assortment
for
men,
women
and
youth
is
complex,
but
the
program
for
reaping
the
benefits
is
simple:
wear
HeatGear®
when
it's
hot,
ColdGear®
when
it's
cold,
and
AllSeasonGear®
between
the
extremes.
Under
Armour’s
mission
is
to
make
all
athletes
better
through
passion,
design
and
the
relentless
pursuit
of
innovation.
As
of
Fall
of
2016,
Goucher
College
Athletics
have
gone
through
a
significant
change
with
the
unveiling
of
a
new
Gopher
logo
and
the
announcement
of
a
three-‐year
partnership
with
Baltimore-‐based
Under
Armour.
"We
are
excited
to
be
able
to
build
our
relationship
with
Under
Armour,"
says
Goucher's
Director
of
Athletics
Geoffrey
Miller
in
the
“Game
Changers”
article
on
the
Goucher
College
Athletics
webpage.
"With
Goucher
being
recognized
as
one
of
the
top
ten
innovative
schools
in
the
country,
it
makes
sense
for
us
to
partner
with
a
very
innovative,
progressive,
and
international
company."
The
contract,
a
three-‐year
commitment,
not
only
helps
the
Gophers
rebrand
their
athletics
uniforms,
but
it
also
grants
Goucher
athletes
the
ability
to
use
the
Under
Armour
gym
and
other
facilities.
Under
Armour
has
recently
impressed
the
dance
community
with
their
newest
athlete
partnership
with
Misty
Copeland,
the
first
African-‐American
Principal
Ballerina
with
American
Ballet
Theater.
Previous
to
this
partnership,
Under
Armour
had
not
partnered
with
professional
dancers,
thus
sparking
a
huge
interest
in
the
dance
community.
They
have
collaborated
with
Misty
on
multiple
commercial,
showcasing
her
incredible
athleticism
and
artistry
in
Under
Armour
gear
such
as
sports
bras,
spandex,
and
leggings.
They
have
also
collaborated
in
creating
a
Misty
Copeland
Collection
that
includes
colorful
and
sleek
leggings
and
sports
bras.
We
include
the
information
above
in
order
to
debunk
the
idea
that
dancers
only
require
ballet
attire
such
as
leotard
and
tights.
Although
this
is
what
is
primarily
worn
in
a
traditional
classical
ballet
setting,
dancers
still
use
basic
workout
clothing
when
working
on
their
craft.
For
example,
many
Goucher
dancers
are
involved
heavily
in
rehearsals,
clubs,
independent
projects
that
require
dance,
and
cross-‐training
activities
outside
of
the
classroom
where
the
requirements
for
their
attire
is
more
relaxed
than
what
is
expected
in
class.
The
students
often
dance
everyday,
which
requires
them
to
have
far
more
athletic
attire
than
is
expected.
There
is
clearly
a
need
for
dance
wear
past
tights
and
leotards,
so
we
ask
that
the
Administrators
at
Goucher
College
consider
this
petition.
Project
Description
We
propose
that
the
Dance
Department
be
offered
a
training
apparel
package
including
the
following
items
• 2
Goucher
Dance
Cotton
T-‐Shirts
($5
each)
• 1
Goucher
Dance
UA
Tech
–
Twist
Tank
Tops
($15)
• 1
Pair
of
Goucher
Dance
Spandex
($10)
• 1
Pair
of
Goucher
Dance
Leggings
($30)
• 1
Goucher
Dance
Warm-‐Up
Track
Jacket
($30)
Total
Cost:
$95
Each
item
in
the
package
was
purposefully
thought
out
for
the
dancer’s
interest.
• The
cotton
t-‐shirt
is
a
classic
and
inexpensive
item
for
people
to
work
out;
we
see
dancers
primarily
using
this
item
in
rehearsals
as
well
as
modern
dance
classes.
• The
UA
Tech
–
Twist
Tank
Top
is
great
for
dancers
who
wish
to
wear
a
shirt
while
working
and
still
be
able
to
see
the
lines
of
their
body
because
of
the
form
fitting
material;
we
see
dancers
using
this
item
again
primarily
in
rehearsals
and
in
classes
where
the
professor
requires
more
form
fitting
wear.
• Spandex
and
leggings
are
must
have
items
in
a
dancer’s
wardrobe;
the
flexible
and
breathable
material
allows
for
the
dancer
to
move
freely
and
wick
away
sweat.
The
tight
form
fitting
wear
also
compliments
the
dancer’s
lines
and
allows
for
the
professors
and
viewers
to
clearly
see
the
dancer’s
body.
These
items
can
be
worn
in
any
setting
from
class
to
rehearsal.
• The
Warm-‐Up
Track
Jacket
can
be
used
both
in
and
outside
of
the
studio
environment;
dancers
often
wear
warm-‐up
apparel
like
jackets
and
sweatpants
when
beginning
class
or
rehearsal
in
order
to
get
the
muscles
warm
and
comfortable.
This
jacket
is
also
a
great
way
for
students
to
represent
their
craft
and
school
spirit
throughout
campus.
Please
find
visuals
of
the
UA
Tech
–
Twist
Tank
Top,
Track
Jacket,
and
Spandex
items
below.
It
is
also
important
to
note
that
all
of
these
items
can
be
worn
outside
a
dance
setting.
Many
dancers
in
the
field
cross
train
in
order
to
keep
their
bodies
conditioned;
our
SRC
facilities
are
great
for
the
dancers
to
cross
train
through
cardio
work
as
well
as
weight
lifting.
The
items
in
the
apparel
package
allow
for
the
dancer
to
wear
in
multiple
setting
both
in
dance
and
traditional
workout
regiments.
We
propose
that
each
item
be
engraved
with
the
Goucher
Gopher
Logo
and
be
offered
in
both
blue
and
black
options.
These
are
details
that
can
be
discusses
upon
further
development.
This
package
would
be
available
for
Goucher
students
involved
in
the
Dance
Department
before
each
academic
year
begins,
however
it
would
not
be
mandatory
for
purchase.
We
understand
this
may
create
a
problem
for
orders
to
come
in,
but
we
are
confident
students
who
are
heavily
involved
in
the
department
through
classes,
performances,
and
clubs
would
purchase
the
apparel
package.
We
are
confident
because
many
students
have
spoken
up
about
this
proposal
throughout
our
time
at
Goucher,
so
we
are
aware
that
the
interest
in
there.
We
estimate
there
will
be
roughly
50
to
60
confirmed
orders;
this
number
is
estimated
from
the
average
number
of
students
who
declare
Dance
as
their
major
as
well
as
the
average
number
of
students
involved
in
the
Dance
Concerts.

TOTAL
$95
(per
student)
Total,
the
orders
would
come
out
to
$95
per
student
to
a
six-‐item
package;
meaning
the
department
will
be
spending
roughly
$4,750
to
$5,700
for
50
to
60
students.
However,
we
understand
that
some
may
not
be
financially
capable
of
affording
this
package,
therefore,
we
plan
to
help
lower
the
cost
by
seeking
funding
from
grants
and
organizations
that
have
helped
the
department
in
the
past
such
as:
• The
Office
of
Student
Engagement
• Friend’s
of
Goucher

• Annual

Fall
Into

We
can
petition
to
the
Office
of
Student
Engagement
as
well
as
the
Friend’s
of
Goucher
Dance
Foundation
for
funds
to
help
lower
the
costs,
as
well
as
raise
money
for
our
budget
through
a
special
donation
section
in
our
Annual
Fall
Semester
Fundraiser.
We
would
like
to
hopefully
reduce
the
price
of
the
package
to
$75
per
student.
We
calculated
this
price
from
the
average
cost
of
the
athletic
wear
packages
the
athletes
purchase
for
their
sports
teams.
Coming
Together
–
The
Importance
of
the
Proposal
There
is
a
sense
of
disconnect
between
the
dancers
on
campus
and
the
rest
of
the
Athletic
department
on
Goucher’s
campus.
Even
though
the
dancers
and
athletes
are
located
within
the
same
building,
their
paths
rarely
cross.
The
dancers
also
often
feel
overlooked
by
the
college
when
it
comes
to
benefits
like
facilities,
resources
such
as
physical
therapy,
and
attire
when
compared
to
the
Athletics
when
it
is
clear
that
they
are
just
as
involved
in
physical
activity
by
their
sport
counter
parts.
By
offering
the
same
benefits
to
both
the
dancers
and
athletes,
we
hope
that
it
will
relieve
the
sense
of
disconnect,
help
bring
the
two
communities
together,
and
continue
to
uphold,
and
properly
and
professionally
represent
Goucher
College’s
incredible
movers.
Conclusion
We
would
like
to
thank
you
for
taking
the
time
to
consider
our
proposal
for
the
college
to
form
an
athletic
apparel
contract
with
Under
Armour
for
the
Goucher
Dance
Department.
We
believe
this
will
be
a
great
step
forward
for
Goucher
Dance
that
will
bring
even
more
respect
to
the
program,
the
college,
and
the
dancers
who
work
so
hard
and
represent
this
institution
so
well.
