ABSTRACT
The purpose of this experiment was to determine the
elements of our first draft synthesizer that were easiest to
use for those who are lacking experience. We tested our
synthesizer and mini manual on students in our class that
had no experience with synthesizers.
After the experiment, we learned that our manual was
too complex along with the synthesizer, meaning we need
to work on the simplicity of it if we want an easy-to-use
synthesizer.

INTRODUCTION
How do we teach students with little or no
experience to use a synthesizer?
We believe that with a small written instruction
manual and our synthesizer design, people will be able to
learn the basics of using a synthesizer to create music.

METHOD
1. Code first draft of synthesizer
2. Let half of volunteers try to create a simple beat using
instruction manual, and other half not use one
3. Calculate usability of synthesizer
4. Revise first draft based on results of experiments
5. Experiment and revise again until satisfied with
results

RESULTS
Classmates who used the instruction manual found it
somewhat helpful, but also slightly confusing, whereas
those who didn’t have the instruction manual didn’t
understand at all.

DISCUSSION
This shows us that the instruction manual is
necessary, but must be more simple in order for anyone
to be able to use our synthesizer. We want it to be easy to
use so that people with no experience can still create
songs.
