How do Eliezer Vladek and Eliezer both found some joy in being in the camps with
from Night someone they knew such as family and friends. They both were able to
written by Elie find some relief in being with the people they knew and were close to.
Wiesel, and Eliezer thought, “We did not know, as yet, which was the better side, right
Vladek in Maus, or left, which road led to prison and which to the crematoria. Still, I was
My Father happy, I was near my father.” (Wiesel 32) In Vladek’s case it was not his
Bleeds History family, but a friend. “’Vladek!’ ‘Orbach! Am I glad to see you!’...Orbach
written by Art was a friend from my uncle…” (Spiegelman 63) They had different
Spiegelman, reactions to these situations as well. Eliezer in the camps reacted with fear
handle/react to and a lack of hope. He didn’t believe he could make it through the camps
being moved alive. Vladek on the other hand had a sense of hope and he believed he
into the prison would get out of the camp. His attitude towards the situation was slightly
camps? How did more positive than Eliezer’s. Eliezer’s attitude was mostly negative. The
they similarly only times mentioned in the book where he has a more positive attitude is
and differently when he is talking to his father. Both characters did their best to stay alive
handle the and get through the hard situations with the most positive reactions that
situation? they could have.

How do the The authors’ tones are similar in a few ways. The overall most similar way
authors’ tones in is the seriousness in each of book’s tones. They each have small tone
Night and Maus similarities such as the anger and sadness felt in certain passages. The
My Father authors write these tones into the passages to make sure the feelings they
Bleeds History, are expressing are felt. There are also quite a few differences in the
compare to one authors’ tones. In Maus, My Father Bleeds History, there are a few
another’s? Why passages where the tone is uplifting and more humorous. “’Go in and say
are they similar you just got a letter from me saying I’d be home in a week.’ I stood at the
and why are they door, listening… ‘Don’t joke! If Vladek was coming home, he’d have
different? written to us too!’ ‘Surprise!’” (Spiegelman 66) Night, on the other hand
does not have the occasional uplifting tone as Maus, My Father Bleeds
History does. “‘…May His name be celebrated and sanctified…’
whispered my father. For the first time, I felt anger rising within me. Why
should I sanctify His name? The Almighty, the eternal and terrible Master
of the Universe, chose to be silent. What was there to thank Him for?”
(Wiesel 33) Night is a human document that reflects everything that
happened in the camps through the author’s memories. They both have an
overall serious tone that sets the mood of the book.
How are Eliezer’s and Artie’s relationship with their fathers are very different. Artie
Eliezer’s in Maus, My Father Bleeds History, is not very close with his father. They
relationship with rarely talk to each other and keep in touch. They only got in touch so Artie
his father in could write his comic book about his father’s story. “I went out to see my
Night, and father in Rego park. I hadn’t seen him in a long time- we weren’t that
Artie’s close.” (Spiegelman 11) Eliezer from Night on the other hand is very close
relationship with to his father. Throughout the book Eliezer goes to great extents to be with
his father in his father or save him. His father is what was giving him any hope and will
Maus, My to push through those hard times. He took care of his father even when he
Father Bleeds knew he could not live and helped his dad push through when he had given
History, up. “’If you don’t give me your crown, it will cost you much more!’…he
different? How knew my weak spot. My father had never served in the military and could
are they the not march in step….That presented Franek with the opportunity to torment
same? him and, on a daily basis, to thrash him savagely….We had to give in.” He
gave up his gold crown just to keep his father from being thrashed every
day. Eliezer really relied on his father to get through those hard times
whereas Artie did not rely on his father. They both however love their
fathers despite the way they treat them.

How are Eliezer’s and Artie’s relationship with their mothers are very different.
Eliezer’s Eliezer from Night, does not seem to have a very close relationship with
relationship with his mother. “I saw them walking farther and farther away…I didn’t know
his mother in that this was the moment in time and the place where I was leaving my
Night, and mother and Tzipora forever.” (Wiesel 29) He didn’t seem as worried when
Artie’s he was separated from his mother in the beginning of the book and then
relationship with she isn’t mentioned at all in the rest of the book. Artie from Maus, My
his mother in Father Bleeds History thinks about his mother quite often. “‘Your mother
Maus, My killed herself-she’s dead!’ I could avoid the truth no longer- the doctor’s
Father Bleeds words clattered inside me….I felt confused; I felt angry; I felt numb!... I
History, didn’t exactly feel like crying, but figured I should.” (Spiegelman 101) He
different? How loves her very dearly and he wonders why she committed suicide. Also, he
are they the has a step mother whom he respects although his father does not. They are
same? similar in a way because they each have respect towards their mothers.
Whether or not they had a close relationship they still felt some form of
sadness when each died.
How do the The narrators’ point of views differs in a couple ways. In Night, the main
narrators’ point character Eliezer’s point of view is actually living through the holocaust
of view differ in and his personal experiences through those times. “Many years later, in
Night and Maus, Paris, I sat in the Metro, reading my newspaper. Across the aisle, a
My Father beautiful woman with dark hair and dreamy eyes. I had seen those eyes
Bleeds History? before. ‘Madame, don’t you recognize me?’ ‘I don’t know you, sir.’ ‘In
How are they 1944, you were in Poland, in Buna, weren’t you?’…And then, after a
similar? moment of silence: ‘wait… I do remember…’” (Wiesel 53) In Maus, My
Father Bleeds History, the main character Artie’s point of view is him
writing a story about his father telling him his experiences in the holocaust.
Though the main character isn’t the one who lived through the holocaust
the father shares all of his personal journey’s and trials in the form of a
story. “‘I don’t want you should write this in your book.’ ‘What? Why
not?’ ‘It has nothing to do with Hitler, with the Holocaust!’ ‘But pop-its
great material. It makes everything real- more human.’” (Spiegleman 23)
Both narrators’ points of view delivered the stories, though, just in
different forms.

How is the The setting in Night and Maus, My Father Bleeds History are different in
setting in Night many ways. One way they are different is because Night’s setting changes
different from from where he lived originally to many different internment camps to
Maus, My France in the latest part of his life mentioned. Also, Eliezer is 15 at the
Father Bleeds beginning of the book and at the end of the book he is an adult, therefore;
History? How the setting spans over many years. “After the war, I learned the fate of
are they similar? those who had remained at the infirmary. They were, quite simply,
liberated by the Russians, two days after the evacuation.” (Wiesel 82) The
story’s setting changes quite frequently throughout the book. In Maus, My
Father Bleeds History, the setting takes place in Rego Park at his father’s
home. The story within the story takes place during the holocaust and the
setting there changes to each of the places Vladek was relocated or where
he was living in that part of the story. “‘I still want to draw that book about
you… the one I used to talk to you about…about your life in Poland, and
the war.’” (Spiegelman 12) The current time of the story Maus, My Father
Bleeds History is many years after the war, and the setting never changes
in the actual time. Both settings change very frequently in certain cases
about the holocaust.
How are Eliezer, Artie and Eliezer have many differences when it comes to the way they are
the protagonist affected by the holocaust. Artie in Maus, My Father Bleeds History, is
of Night, and barely affected by the story about the holocaust that his father shares with
Artie, the him. “‘Wait! Please, dad, if you don’t keep your story chronological, I’ll
protagonist of never get it straight…tell me more about 1941 and 1942.’” (Spiegelman
Maus, My 82) Artie cares more about his story that he is writing than how his father
Father Bleeds must have felt going through those situations. He feels less sympathy
History, towards his father and more concern about his own story. They both feel
similarly and sad at some points in the stories for people they knew who also went
differently through the holocaust and suffered for many years. In Night, Eliezer is
affected by the very noticeably affected by the holocaust. Throughout the story he
Holocaust? develops depression and at some times suicidal. By the end of the book
Eliezer still never got over his depression. “I was transferred to a hospital
and spent two weeks between life and death. One day when I was able to
get up, I decided to look at myself in the mirror on the opposite wall. I had
not seen myself since the ghetto. From the depths of the mirror, a corpse
was contemplating me. The look in his eyes as he gazed at me has never
left me.” (Wiesel 115) Through everything Eliezer went through he
survived but was affected by the depression that overcame him while he
was in the camps.
