The L.A. abrasion test measures the degradation of a coarse aggregate sample that is placed in a rotating
drum with steel spheres inside. Once the test is complete, the calculated mass of aggregate that has
broken apart to smaller sizes is expressed as a percentage of the total mass of aggregate. Therefore, lower
L.A. abrasion loss values indicate aggregate that is tougher and more resistant to abrasion.

As long as I read from many references, there is no standard L.A. abrasion specification for mix design;
specifications are typically established by local agencies. For more detail, U.S. state specifications limit the
abrasion of coarse aggregate for HMA use to a maximum ranging from 25 to 55 percent, with most states
using a specification of 40 or 45 percent. From any of these limits, the percentage of tested aggregate in
our experiment is 11% which is still in desired limit.

Stress Strain Curve

The test is very useful to determine the steel bar 4
behavior when subjected to load. From the test 3,5
we can see obviously that the bar has the linear 3
region. We also can determine the yielding stress, 2,5
the stress during necking, and the stress when 2
the bar is breaking apart. All this information 1,5
is very useful to determine the strength of 1
construction design especially when considering
0,5
the safety and permissible load.
