A. Fungsi Sosial
Pada lingkup fungsi sosial, kita dituntut untuk dapat memahami isi teks secara umum. Pertanyaan
yang berhubungan dengan fungsi teks akan berhubungan dengan topik, tujuan, nilai yang diusung,
hubungan penulis dan pembaca, serta judul.

1. Menentukan pernyataan yang tepat terkait topik

Topik merupakan pengikat gagasan yang terdapat dalam suatu teks. Suatu teks ditulis
berdasarkan satu topik utama yang diuraikan dalam beberapa paragraf. Pertanyaan yang sering
muncul berhubungan dengan topik teks adalah sebagai berikut:
1. What is the main idea of the passage/text?
2. What is the subject of the passage/text?
3. What is the text talking about?
4. What is the text mainly about?
5. What is the text about?
6. The text tells us about …
7. The main idea of the text is …

2. Menentukan pernyataan yang tepat terkait tujuan

Suatu teks pasti ditulis dengan tujuan tertentu. Tujuan teks tersebut seharusnya ditangkap oleh
pembaca sehingga pembaca tidak salah dalam menangkap pesan yang ingin disampaikan oleh penulis.
Pertanyaan yang sering muncul berhubungan dengan tujuan teks adalah sebagai berikut:
1. What is the purpose of the passage/text?
2. What is the communicative purpose of the passage/text?
3. What is the social function of the passage/text?
4. Why did the writer write the passage/text?
5. The purpose of the passage/text is …
6. From the passage/text, we know that the writer wants to …

Suatu teks pasti ditulis dengan tujuan tertentu. Tujuan teks tersebut seharusnya ditangkap oleh
pembaca sehingga pembaca tidak salah dalam menangkap pesan yang ingin disampaikan oleh penulis.
