SOUTH MOUNTAIN CHAPTER

Established in 1961, the Ruffed Grouse Society is North America's foremost conservation organization dedicated to
preserving our sporting traditions by creating healthy forest habitat for ruffed grouse, American woodcock and other
wildlife. RGS works directly with landowners and government agencies to develop critical habitat utilizing scientific
management practices.
The South Mountain Chapter of the Ruffed Grouse Society is made of local volunteers who are dedicated to creating
early successional habitat for grouse and other wildlife that thrive in these conditions. Currently the South Mountain
Chapter is funding several projects on public lands, including Swatara State Park, State Game Lands (SGL) 211 and
Weiser State Forest. In the recent past, the South Mountain Chapter has completed habitat projects at SGL 145, SGL
80 and Buchanon State Forest. The South Mountain Chapter has invested over $250,000 into transforming “old
growth” forests into young, healthy forest habitats.
While so-called old growth forests are both visually and emotionally appealing, they are no friend to wildlife. Ruffed
grouse, woodcock, whitetail deer, golden-winged warblers and dozens of species of other songbirds and other forest
creatures rely on young forest habitats. The South Mountain Chapter relies heavily on our volunteers and donations
to continue our mission of creating young forests that will benefit all forms of wildlife. Your generous support will help
the South Mountain Chapter create healthy forest habitat for Pennsylvania’s wildlife and preserve our great hunting
heritage for future generations. All funds raised will be applied directly to one of these projects and the overall mission
of healthy forests, abundant wildlife, and sporting traditions.
Our goal for the Eastern PA Habitat Fund Drive is $7500 by the end of summer. We’re asking our supporters to consider
donating $100, $250, $500, $1000 or any other amount that you can afford. As a 501 (C) nonprofit, all donations made
to the Ruffed Grouse Society are 100% tax deductible. Additionally, 100% of your donations will go directly toward
our habitat restoration projects right here in Pennsylvania.
Your membership, contributions, and participation at chapter banquets and other RGS events will help fund much
needed research, education and habitat improvement. This is essential to the preservation of quality grouse hunting.
We encourage all hunters, outdoor enthusiasts and conservationists to join us for a tour of our existing project sites
to see firsthand how funds raised are applied directly to wildlife conservation.
Those willing to donate can make checks payable to the South Mountain Chapter of RGS. Checks can be mailed to
our Chapter President, Jan Christen, 675 Old Pike Lititz, PA 17543. Please join us at our next banquet event “Brew
and Que’ for Habitat” being held at the Fox Chase Golf and Banquet Facility on September 6, 2018 from 5:30pm –
9pm. To obtain a banquet flyer, please contact a chapter member or see information below.
