the Essoldo and moved up to Hexham, and a job at
the Forum Theatre. Being only seven miles from
the farm where my folks lived temporarily, I was
able to go home each night on an "autocycle" I
bought for the purpose. However things did not
work out quite as planned: I be~ame aware, for
the first time in my life that living and working
in a small town was akin to -being a goldfish in a
bowl: Everyone soon got to know everyone else...
which is O.K. in some respects ••• but is somewhat
inconvenient at times, because everyone knows your ~ ~
business and, i t seems, takes a joy in telling
others your every move: And, it seemed to me, the
people were, somehow "different" from the everyday'
folks one associated with in cities. There was
"eally nothing I could put my finger on but I
,<ometimes felt I was in the "twilight z~ne" when
it came to communicating: As time went on I found
that I wasn't too far off in my first impressions: ,
The war years of course were "boom" years for
movie theatres and we had capacity houses always,
regardless of what was showing. The theatre was a
comparatively new building, with a seating capac­

ity of about 1200 as I recall. There was a stage ~

but no theatre switchboard as such, so "live" per­
formances were handicapped by lack of equipment.
This was strange, to me, because there was provis­ ~~ ~ what he was doing. Nevertheless, the Chief in any

FIVE THOUSAND movie theatres in" the British Isles.

Nowadays of course, "presentation" is a word that
few people in movie exhibition know anything about
~.~ and one finds blank screens ( a "no no" in the
~ ~ business) and all manner of crudeness in showing
films that old-timers shake their heads at sadly.
_V ' ~ I was dedicated to putting on as perfec t a show as
it): possible and the lack of necessary facilities was
~ constantly bugging me. I went to the extremes of
~ ~ 1'1 p~rchasing appropriate recordings to play-in a
~ ~ f1lm or to use as intermission music. I made many
••, ~ "color wheels" and similar gadgets out of gelatin
, t:S~ for flooding the titles and "setting the mood" for
~ ~ each film and timing was most important. I soon
~ ~ discovet:ed that the policy at the Forum was, to say
~... the least "indifferent" ••• nobody cared. The public

came to ev~ry show anyway, so why bother? This
attitude d1d not add to one's enjoyment of their
~ work, and so I was continually "falling foul" of

u~ the chief operator (there were three of us) who
obviously didn't know •• and didn't care a dam about
~ ~I ~ Going home each night was a new experience for
~:ti f'. me , but it didn't last long: A terrific snow storm
~~ ~ wound up staying in the theatre, sleeping on lobby
~~ I sofas, for a full three weeks: Hearing reports
that the snow was at last cleared from the roads, I
thought after this prolonged period that I'd try to
~ ~ make it home. We had no telephone (few Britishers
~ ~ had phones then) so I had no means of knOWing just
what to expect beyond the main highways. I started
~ out and almost didn't live to tell the tale:
~ ~'" I set out for home at around 11:30 pm after the
~ show one night, and got about four miles alon
the winding country roads, then the snow-clea~in
~ operations left off to some degree a d th g
~ ~ became -thicker and thicker. I-finail n ot :osnow
