Raiders of Lost Ark Lab Report

Hypothesis:
In the movie clip from Raiders of the Lost Ark, the density of the sand will not be
the same as the density of the Golden Idol which will therefore activate the trap.

Materials:
- Golden Idol(Cylindrical-shaped bottle)
- Ruler
- Calculator
- Pencil
- Datasheet

Procedure:
1. Get necessary items from instructor and take out datasheet.
2. Review instructions on datasheet before starting and clarify any questions
3. Use the ruler measure the radius of the cylinder(Golden Idol) and use that to find
the diameter
4. Use the ruler to find the height of the cylinder(Golden Idol) and use the formula
(π X R^2 X H) to find the volume
5. Make sure to use units for all numbers and convert answer to cm^3
6. Once the density of the cylinder(Golden Idol) is found, change the formula
D=M/V to M= (D)(V) to find the mass of the cylinder(Golden Idol)
7. Plug in the values for density and volume to find mass and make sure answer is
in grams
8. Given the density of the sand and the mass of the sand, the volume should be
found by using another variation of D=M/V which is V=M/D
9. Plug in the values for density and mass to find the volume which should be in mL
for the answer
10. Set up an equation which first transfers mL to pints, then from pints to quarts,
from quarts to gallons lastly. (473.18mL= 1 pint) (2 pint= 1 quart) (4 quarts= 1
gallon)
11. Using the same method as step 10, create an equation to convert the mass of
the idol from grams to pounds(1kg= 2.205 lbs) (1000g= 1kg)
12. Using all your newfound data and calculations, come up with two unrealistic
things in the scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark
Data:

Step 3:
- Radius of Cylindrical Bottle: 4.5 cm
- Diameter of Cylindrical Bottle: 9 cm (Radius X 2)
- (4.5 cm X 2)= 9 cm

Step 4:
- Height: 21.5 cm
- Volume of Cylindrical Bottle: 1,367.77 cm^3 (π X R^2 X H)
- (π cm X 20.25 cm X 21.5 cm)= 1,367.77 cm^3

Step 7:
- Mass of Golden Idol: 26,397.96 g (M= D X V)
- (19.3 g/mL X 1,367.77 cm^3)= 26,397.96 g

Step 8:
- Volume of Sand: 14,998.84 mL(V= M/D)
- (26,397.96 g / 1.76 g/mL)= 14,998.84 mL

Step 10:
- Volume of Sand in Gallons: 3.96 gallons
- 14,998.84 mL / 473. 18 mL = 31.7 pints
- 31.7 pints / 2 pints = 15.85 quarts
- 15.85 quarts / 4 quarts = 3.96 Gallons

Step 11:
- Mass of Idol in Pounds
- 26, 397.96 g / 1000 g = 26.4 kg
- 26.4 kg X 2.205 lbs = 58.2 lbs
Mass Density Volume

Sand 26,397.96 g 14,998.84 mL 1.76 g/mL

Golden Idol 26,397.96 g 1,367.77 cm^3 19.3 g/mL

Conclusion:

In the scene from Raiders of Lost Ark, Indiana Jones tries to estimate the mass
of the idol with a bag of sand to complete the swap and not set off the trap. However,
the trap was not set for mass, it was set for density. Density is calculated using the
equation D=M/V which is mass divided by volume. Indian Jones did not take this into
account at all when trying to swap the idol out. He had no regard for the volume for the
idol which caused him to not calculate the density at all. While he did have regard for
the mass, he simply eyeballed the amount when he needed to precisely get the amount
of sand to exactly 58.205 pounds. Using all this as evidence, it can be seen that Indiana
Jones did not get the same density as the idol and therefore the trap was set off.
