Pastor’s Corner
I’ve got another “cute kid” photo to post in my pastor’s article this week, as we have
another baptism this coming Sunday, May 27. Meet Ethan James Marek (photo below)
born September 28, 2017 to Kristin and Alex Marek. Ethan’s grandparents are Jill and
Tim Malefyt, and his aunt and uncle are Doug and Dana Malefyt. Ethan will be baptized at
the 10:45 a.m. service, and I wanted to provide his photo here so that the 8:30 a.m.
worshippers can see him and be able to congratulate the Marek/Malefyt families.

Because we are having a baptism this Sunday and are having Holy Communion on the
following Sunday, I’ve decided to do a two-part sermon series on our two sacraments. “Sacrament” comes
from the same root as “sacred,” meaning “consecrated” and “holy.” United Methodists subscribe to the basic
definition of sacrament formulated by Augustine of Hippo: “an outward sign of an inward grace that has
been instituted by Jesus Christ.”

The next two sermons will focus on how these consecrated and holy acts are lived out in the Christian life
and why they are so important to us. On Sunday, June 10, Karen and I will be away celebrating our 39th
wedding anniversary, and we will welcome Zachery Uporsky to our pulpit. He tells me that God has put a
message on his heart for our congregation, and far be it for me to deny the pulpit to one who has already
shown us that God has called on Zach to bring His Word to the people!

June is an exciting month for many reasons, and we begin with a “bang”
with our annual carnival on June 2. The carnival affords us the
opportunity to offer a fun, mostly free activity to our community and
especially to families who might be struggling financially. It, along with
the block parties which begin the following week (June 7, continuing for
a total of eight weeks), are great opportunities for us as a congregation
to interact with people from the community, discern their needs, and if
possible, to tell them about Jesus and how we work together as a faith
community. We are witnesses to the great things God has done and is
doing in our community!

We need your help. If you look on page 2 of the Trumpet Call, you can
find out how to be in touch with those in charge of these activities and to
volunteer to run an activity at the carnival, flip burgers or hotdogs at the
block parties, or simply mill about and talk to people you meet at these
activities and to show them that you care and God cares for them. May
God lead you to discern how best your gifts and talents are to be used!
Blessings in Christ, Pastor Jim
